The Nine Social Science Disciplines

The Nine Social Science Disciplines
By Jensen DG. Mañebog (© 2013)

1. Anthropology refers to the study of humans. As a social science disipilne, it examines all aspects of human life and culture. It seeks to understand human origins and adaptation, and the diversity of cultures and worldviews.

2. Economics studies the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services. The term may also refer to the financial aspects of something, as in “the economics of managing a business.

It deals with the optimum allocation of scarce resources among its alternatives to satisfy the unlimited human wants and needs of the people. Economists study the ways individuals and groups (such as governments, firms and nations)allocate resources (including money, buildings, land, time, tools and know-how) to satisfy needs and wants.

3. Geography is the science of place. It is the social science that studies the distribution and arrangement of all elements of the earth’s surface.

Marxism and Communism: The Real Score

Marxism and Communism: The Real Score

German political philosopher Karl Marx created the system known as Marxism, together with his collaborator Friedrich Engels. In their view, later known as historical materialism, the history of society is a history of class struggle in which the ruling class uses religion and other traditions and institutions, as well as its economic power, to reinforce its domination over the working classes. Human culture, according to Marx, is dependent on economic (material) conditions and serves economic ends.

Religion, for Marx, is “the opiate of the masses” that serves the political end of suppressing mass revolution. Marxism is a theory of revolution, of history, of economics, and of politics, and it served as the ideology for Communism. Although he was a philosopher Marx had disdain for merely theoretical intellectual work, stating, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in different ways; the point is to change it.”

Marx was in many respects the most influential political theorist of the 19th century. Marx advocated the abolition of private property and predicted the demise of capitalism after a series of recurring crises.

LEARNING WHILE REVIEWING : AN E-LEARNING REVIEW (NAT 2014)

The National achievement Test (NAT) is a locally-made standardized test designed to determine pupils/students’ achievement level, strengths and weaknesses in five key curricular subject areas at the end of the school year.”

The NAT, which is a system-based assessment, was specially designed to gauge learning outcomes across target levels in identified periods of basic education. In particular, it spans from mid assessment of elementary education which falls on the third grade, and then to a terminal exit assessment which falls on the sixth grade. The test results in NAT G6 can likewise serve as measurement of incoming first year students’ readiness for high school

The NAT was developed to measure what pupils/students in G3, G6 and 4th year know and can do in five subject areas: Science, Math, English, Filipino and Hekasi in Elem. and AP in 4th yr

Specifically, the test aims to:

  1.  provide empirical information on the achievement level of pupils/students in G3, G6 and 4th yr to serve as guide for policy makers, administrators, curriculum planners, supervisors, principals and teachers in their respective course of action
  2.   identify and analyze variations on achievement levels across the years by region, division, school and other variables determine the rate of improvement in basic education with respect to individual schools within certain time frames
  3. On the other hand, the NAT for  Fourth yr serves as assessment of whole learning.
