Ferdinand Marcos Remains: Be transferred to Heroes’ Cemetery or Not?

FERDINAND EMMANUEL EDRALIN MARCOS, SR. (September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989) was a Filipino leader and President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He was a lawyer, member of the Philippine House of Representatives (1949–1959) and a member of the Philippine Senate (1959–1965). He was the Senate President from 1963–1965.
While in power, he implemented wide-ranging programs of infrastructure development and economic reform. However, some claim that this was largely overshadowed by his authoritarian way of ruling the country after 1972. His administration was marred by massive corruption, nepotism, political repression, and human rights violations.

Possible reasons for the proposal to transfer his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         His assertion of Martial Law maintained peace and order to the community.
·         New society-educational reforms, labor forms, land reforms social services were made.
·         He built more schools, hospitals and infrastructure than any of his predecessors combined.
·         Crony capitalism was promoted which was intended to redistribute monopolies traditionally owned by Chinese and Mestizo oligarchs to Filipino businessmen.
·         He promoted Filipino culture and nationalism through the establishment of (CCP) Cultural Center of the Philippines in accordance to Executive Order No. 30 s. 1966.

Possible reasons against the transfer of his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         Martial Law was the dark times. He was then a human rights violator, for the tortures among prisoners made by military men.
·         The writ of habeas corpus was suspended; the military picked up and incarcerated many innocent civilians on trumped up charges of sedition. More often than not, these people were convicted without trial, and denied the due process of law.
·         To help finance a number of economic development projects, the Marcos government borrowed large amounts of money from international lenders, making the Philippines one of the most indebted countries in Asia.
·         In practice of the crony capitalism, it led to graft and corruption via bribery, racketeering, and embezzlement. It is estimated that Marcos alone stole at least $5 billion from the Filipino treasury.
·         There were misuse and misapplication of funds “for the construction of the Film Center, where X-rated and pornographic films are exhibited, contrary to public morals and Filipino customs and traditions.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF MONICA POSADAS. I totally agree with what Monica has said.

This is a reaction to the comment of Ms. Monica Posadas.

This is a REACTION to the comment of MONICA POSADAS. I am not in favor because I simply believe that Marcos is not a hero. Considering the hardships of Filipinos during his time (physical, social, emotional, and mental aspects) -- that certain period of time is disastrous. He let the nation suffer just to achieve what he wants to achieve. For me, real heroes are those who would put your and others' security on top priority even if it would cost him difficulty. C:

This is in reaction to the comment of Macaraig, Jomari E. I agree. I don't think Ferdinand Marcos' remains should be transferred to Libingan ng mga Bayani. He may have contributed significant development for the country but many in cruel ways. After all, the end doesn't justifies the means.

No,Remember the martial law. that's only the reason

No, just remember the martial law.

I agree for remains that he will be transferred to Libingan ng Bayani. He only did his job as a ruler and also his era Philippines is in a good economy.

I agree to transfer his remains to heroes cemetery because he only did his job as a ruler and during his era Philippines is in a good econmy.

"History is written by the victor. History is filled with liars. 'Cause all you need to change the world is one good lie and a river of blood. . .

I agree with him Even Marcos has been brutal in his term I think He deserves to be transferred to heroes cemetery..Lets not just look on those negative things he brought but also look on those good things we all have our own way of being a leader and that's whats his..

I agree. For me, it's just ok to transfer his remain to heroes cemetery. We may say that there are lots of issues regarding with his regime but we must not only focus on the failures that he had done. May mga nagawa din nman syang mabuti for our country.. Lahat naman may pagkukulang, so all we have to do is to accept it. :)

I dont agree on her post . I think it's not good to transfer Marcos' remain to Heroes cemetery, because there are lots of people who were affected by his law.

I agree on her. for me naman, sa palagay ko, hindi naman na kelangan pang pag-usapan ang mga ganitong bagay.. It's just a matter of tansferring his remains.

i dont agree. it's not good to transfer his remains in heroes cemetery because he caused many people suffer in pain.

for me it is right to transfer him in heroes cemetery because in his time crimen decreases

i agree.. Filipino known former President Marcos for his dictatorship but despite of all the hardship he did for the Filipinos we know that he such a good leader and during his leadership Philippines is one of the strong, rich and progressive country in Asia.

hi sir/mam aso i have read your comment and i humbly disagree on it because in Marcos regime our economy is stronger than the neighbor countries. 1 dollar is equal to 1 peso at that time. And I think that it is the natural calamities that happened after his regime cause the fall of our economy and also the privatization of government-own companies on the time of Pres. Ramos also cause the fall in the financial stability of our country.

With all due respect, I disagree that there is nothing to worry about if your not violating the law because some people who are innocent are punished by Marcos during Martial Law and a few of them are accused by Marcos even though they are innocent. So all of the people, innocent or not are afraid because of the violence at that time.

I beg to disagree bro, but I think it is wrong to accuse someone killing somebody without evidences. And also, there is also one fact that maybe you didn't know, EDSA Revolution was only peaceful and non-violent because of one fact. Marcos ordered his Chief of Staff not to attack.

To Engr. Mund , thank you for your time to read the article and i would respect your comment na proclamation of Martial Law is the right way to insist peace and order to the society and also recognize the value of his projects. Thank you :)

In my opinion, former President Ferdinand Marcos should not be transferred into a heroes cemetery. Even if he did much for our country, still it is not the basis of transferring him in a heroes cemetery. We have a factors of being a hero but i don't think he will fit into it. We should respect that he is once a President of the Philippines and became a great leader for our country but we should also respect a true heroes of our nation. A hero deliberately and courageously overcomes obstacles for the benefit of others without regard to personal consequences. Conquered obstacles are the only qualifying credentials of heroes and a measure of one's true leadership.

I think its not a good idea because Ferdinand Marcos should be in a place where everyone thinks he belong and a place where he can find peace than a place where many will question him just being there.

I agree beacause Marcos made our country so productive before. We should also look in the good things that he did not only the Martial Law thingy. Try to study our history so you can prove to yourselves that he also has the heart of being a good leader in this country. He maybe did some mistakes but its not an excuse to hate him.

---AGREE....

ferdinand marcos should not be transferred in Heroes' cemetery because we all know that he is not a hero and he never did any heroic thing in his entire tenure. in 20 yrs of his stay as a president, Marcos controlled the press people in expressing their opinions, feelings and thoughts freely. he limited the media to publish diff. news about the situation of the Philippines during his presidency. he did not want other countries know what was really happening to the Filipinos. he was very strict. he commanded the Philippine army to kill people who were wandering around in exceeding curfew of him. nothing heroic he did on his 20 years of stay as a president. we all know that the reason of People power 1 was because of his declaration of Martial Law. he has also been suspected in the death of Ninoy Aquino.

good afternoon! i just read your comment about Mr. Marcos. with all you respect about what your said, it is true that it may cause intrigues and controversies once President Marcos will buried at LMB. but try to compare this to Gen. Reyes. he suicide because of issues putted in him. marcos, on the other hand, a former president, a valor medal awardee and veteran of WWII. both are included in the LMB requirements. Marcos died not in his country. for me, Marcos should be buried in LMB.

I agree that the former president Ferdinand Marcos be transferred in the heroes cemetery. Marcos has done lots of things which I believe became the turning point in the Philippine government. It was evident how Marcos changed the culture in our system.

Ferdinand Marcos is our former president not a hero that is why his remains should not be transferred to the cemetery of the hero. As a president, all he has done is part of his duty and responsibility that is why he cannot be considered as a hero. He just make the Filipinos suffer and he abused the power given to him as The President of the Republic of the Philippines...

I think former president Ferdinand Marcos deserves to be transfered at hero's cemetery. He was the one who put the philippines on top among the asian countries. He did a mistake, but for me he is the best president that Philippines ever had.

Yes, i guess Ferdinand Marcos did gave filipinos such abusements and also made them suffer, well based on most people's stories. But for me it's actually Marcos who made the Philipines a... Well let's just say a better and a high country. His mission and visions wer'e actually part of having a disciplinary act that filipinos should all have. I doubt that Philippines was in a fall situation during Marcos' period because based on my study the peso back then was actually as high or in the same level of dollar and Philippines had it's abundance then. But as of now, it's always corruption and poverty of our government has always takes place. So my point is if Marcos was not conclude as a hero then would Philippines have most of its resources as of now that was all projects of Marcos? Such as MRT and LRT and others, And would Philippines be that successful back then because of how Marcos run our government? Most times it's not the words or promises given but the action taken!!! Think about it,

Ferdinand Marcos is a good authoritarian indeed he earned many citations for his works. On other hand, many Filipinos opposed from his self-rule. To be transfer his body to heroes cemetery is not rude, it shows that we can forgive but we can't forget.

yes , the remains of ferdinand marcos should be transferred in the heroes cemetery ,he's still has the right for that .. alam nating lahat kung anu ang mga kabutihang nagawa nya para sa ating bansa.kung naging mahigpit man ang kanyang pamamalalakad , nakatulong pa rin ito upang mabawasan ang krimen. he did a good job in leading our country. he's a good leader , a good president na syang nag mulat sa atin ng maraming bagay. wala pa man ako nung panahong naging isa syang presidente , base sa mga kwento ng magulang ko , maganda naman ang kanyang pamamalakad .. di man maiwasan ang corruption pero at least he still did hes best as a president.

why not? Marcos is an absolutely great leader. I read some articles with regards to " economic growth has gained pace in recent years to become one of the highest in Asia; as such the Philippines has been labeled one of the next eleven countries due to promising future growth." and it happened in Marcos' term, it only shows that marcos is a good ruler that time. Although i heard some negative comments to the former president, it doesn't mean that he is not capable of being transferred in Heroes Cemetery.

I agree that the remains of our former president must be transferred to the heroes cemetery. Though he implemented the martial law during his time, which some people think that we had no freedom then, his way of ruling the country did good in the economic status of the Philippines. After his fall,no other president maintained peace and order the way he did.

I think it's not a good idea that his remains should be transferred in heroes' cemetery because for me he is not a hero . Being a hero means you are willing to sacrifice yourself for the sake of others . Yes , he did good things to our country but it was his responsibility as a president .

Disagree. Marcos is a great leader, yes. Undeniably, he has a big "contribution" to our nation during his term. We can see him as one of the founding fathers of the modern Philippines. We had a "great" economy during his time, people were disciplined, a great statesman indeed. But, there was also a time when rainclouds seem to be everywhere in the Philippines. This was during the Martial Law. I always asked this to myself, why Martial Law was declared? I'm always thinking for the best answer but it always boils down into this. Because he wants to restore peace and order in the country, didn't he? But there's another question, what caused the disorder? Is it because Marcos overused his power? Then, is Martial Law really for the country? Or Marcos just wanted to control the whole government from his opposers? Enlighten me. We had a good economy back then, low price of commodities, infastructures, etc. But we also have a multimillion(billion) peso debt in the World Bank, IMF. Our country suffered after that, and we are still suffering. Marcos time is a half-good half-bad era. There are good times and bad times. Martial Law for a long time is just wrong. It's love of power not power of love anymore. By the way, this is just an opinion. I'm not even there but I read history books. Anyway, I can't see Marcos as a martyr nor a hero, just a politician. PS. Marcos reigned for more than 2 decades. This is enough for a single administration to build/restore/make a country great. The reason why the Philippines can't emerge from poverty is because our political system is flawed. 6 years for restoration? BS.
