Ferdinand Marcos Remains: Be transferred to Heroes’ Cemetery or Not?

FERDINAND EMMANUEL EDRALIN MARCOS, SR. (September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989) was a Filipino leader and President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He was a lawyer, member of the Philippine House of Representatives (1949–1959) and a member of the Philippine Senate (1959–1965). He was the Senate President from 1963–1965.
While in power, he implemented wide-ranging programs of infrastructure development and economic reform. However, some claim that this was largely overshadowed by his authoritarian way of ruling the country after 1972. His administration was marred by massive corruption, nepotism, political repression, and human rights violations.

Possible reasons for the proposal to transfer his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         His assertion of Martial Law maintained peace and order to the community.
·         New society-educational reforms, labor forms, land reforms social services were made.
·         He built more schools, hospitals and infrastructure than any of his predecessors combined.
·         Crony capitalism was promoted which was intended to redistribute monopolies traditionally owned by Chinese and Mestizo oligarchs to Filipino businessmen.
·         He promoted Filipino culture and nationalism through the establishment of (CCP) Cultural Center of the Philippines in accordance to Executive Order No. 30 s. 1966.

Possible reasons against the transfer of his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         Martial Law was the dark times. He was then a human rights violator, for the tortures among prisoners made by military men.
·         The writ of habeas corpus was suspended; the military picked up and incarcerated many innocent civilians on trumped up charges of sedition. More often than not, these people were convicted without trial, and denied the due process of law.
·         To help finance a number of economic development projects, the Marcos government borrowed large amounts of money from international lenders, making the Philippines one of the most indebted countries in Asia.
·         In practice of the crony capitalism, it led to graft and corruption via bribery, racketeering, and embezzlement. It is estimated that Marcos alone stole at least $5 billion from the Filipino treasury.
·         There were misuse and misapplication of funds “for the construction of the Film Center, where X-rated and pornographic films are exhibited, contrary to public morals and Filipino customs and traditions.

This is a reaction to the comment of Millie Anne Volante. I don't agree to the idea that Former President Marcos should be transferred to the Heroes' Cemetery. It's true that on his time, LRT, CCP and other infrastructures were built, but those projects resulted to a huge debt that Filipinos are paying until this time. With regards to the Martial Law, yes, it may have disciplined the people; however, it also gave them the worst nightmare that they could have ever imagined. Losing their loved ones because they were arrested and killed due to the fact that they just wanted to have a gathering. A simple gathering that the government forbid.

Ferdinand Marcos was a former President of the Republic of the Philippines. I did not reached the year when Ferdinand Marcos was the President but a lot of people including my relatives that was there, they were saying that Philippines was progressive and everyone has a discipline. For my stand in this debate I agree to be transferred to Heroes Cemetery the remains of Ferdinand Marcos, in his term he know as a corrupt and dictatorial but he made reform and raised our economy, they also say that in that term we are in the 2nd richest country in Asia.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF MA. CRISTINA ORFANEL. the stated problem here is that Ferdinand Marcos Remains: Be transferred to Heroes’ Cemetery or Not? I think that we should not care whether he will be transfer to the heroes cemetery or not, but rather we must be thinking of how will we Filipinos will be able to emancipate the others whom experiencing alienation, exploitation and poverty. we should help each other to build up a society with justice and equality. Thank you

This is a reaction to comment of Millie Anne Volante. The vote of the many people and the amount of projects created is not how I will measure a Hero. I did not see the sacrifice and compassion in his leadership. His will to improve the Philippines is good. But his idea on how to do it turns me off. He should be respected as our former president. But let as also respect the real heroes of our nation. Heroes who sacrifice a lot for our country. Heroes who showed compassion for the Filipinos.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF MA. CRISTINA ORFANEL. The fact that many people died during P. Marcos' era and we all know that it's because of him, may be it's one of the reasons why his body should not be transferred in the Heroes' Cemetery. As far as I know, Heroes are those who gave his/ her life for the people and not those who kill people. Thank you!

@Ma.Cr istina Orfanel. I believe that Ferdinand Marcos has done some great things to benefit our country. Who is to say if a person is to be a hero or not? No one person can be the judge of that, But since this topic is being discussed broadly we can assume that a number of people agree with me in that Ferdinand Marcos should be put in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. We have to depend on the majority of the people's opinions to decide whether or not to rest Ferdinand Marcos' remains in the Libingan ng mga Bayani and my vote is yes.

I'd say NO. filipinos are forgiving by nature and have short memories. It doesn't matter where Marcos is buried. The real question is: Is he a hero or a villain? Filipinos are the laughing stock of the world for their failure to distinguish fact from fiction. Just be observant of what is happening in the legislature and in the judiciary as well as in the military and the PNP. Did we every get a closure to all these cases of corruption and other heineous crimes? If Marcos is a hero then he should be buried in the Heroes Cemetery otherwise to hell with him. Its just like asking for a final judgement and the mere fact that its taking this long for him to be buried among the heroes kuno is proof enough that he is not one of them.

His remains should not be transferred at the Heroes’ Cemetery. Although many people say that during his presidency our country was progressive in terms of economic status. But being one of the most indebted countries in Asia is the consequence of what he did for advancement of the economic status of the Philippines .Some people say that his way of leading our nation by proclaiming Martial Law brought peace. Did it really bring peace? I think it didn’t. Fear is what Martial law gave to people. So I think he doesn’t count as a hero and doesn’t deserve to be transferred at the Heroes’ Cemetery

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF NERIELYN DE ASIS I agree with the idea of not allowing the remains of Mr. Marcos to be transferred at the Heroes Cemetery. That is simply because, for me, we cannot consider him a hero. Proclaiming Martial Law isn't an act of an hero because it all did was to put fear into everyone's mind. So, laying his remains at the Heroes Cemetery is just unacceptable for me

This is the reaction to the comment of Ma. Cristina D. Orfanel. Ferdinand Marcos was known as dictator. I disagree to Cristina, I think the remains of Ferdinand Marcos should not be transferred to Heroes Cemetery. A hero is a person who admired by many and who is a role model for everybody. I also appreciate those things that Ferdinand Marcos was created and those things that he did just to disciple people and improve our country that time. We cannot just forget those bad things that he did for many Filipinos that time.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF NERIELYN DE ASIS I agree that he should not be transferred to heroes cemetery because his not a kind of a hero who have a lot of crimes and he also murdered a family political rival..that's not a qualification of a hero..

This is a reaction to the comment of John Elyser Forbes I agree, Filipinos tend to forget everything someone had done. someone who had killed many people because of his power should not be put in the Heroes Cemetery. for the great thing's he had done to the country, it only means he is a great president, but not a hero.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF John Elyser Forbes I disagree, i think that it is time to transfer his remains to Heroes Cemetery. Ferdinand Marcos had done many great things that up to the present is being used.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF John Elyser Forbes I think it is better to not move Ferdinand Marcos remains to Heroes Cemetery, many will criticize why he is there and will just cause another issue. Someone who already passed away should rest in peace, by moving his remains it will cause an uproar and will disturb him. I think it is better to let it stay where it is now, his hometown, where all the people see him as a hero.

In my opinion, Former president Ferdinand Marcos remains should not be go to the Heroes cemetery, although he is a good leader, he rises our economy but still he declare Martial Law and he kill peoples lives for his dictatorship. The true hero saved people not kill people and Former president Marcos ruled the people before by his power of dictatorship.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF JAYZON VITERBO I agree to Jayzon that former president Marcos remains should not go to the Heroes Cemetery, because Marcos kill people for his leadership and Marcos dictate people as if he is the president. He declare Martial Law, and many innocent people died there so I think that Jayzon is right that Marcos remain should not go to the Heroes Cemetery

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF JAYZON VITERBO I agree to Jayzon that Marcos remain should not go to the Heroes Cemetery, why? because he is like Hitler he kill people for his dictatorship.

THIS IS A REACTION TO THE COMMENT OF JAYZON VITERBO I agree to my cousin that Marcos remain should not go to the Heroes Cemetery, because Marcos dictatorship affects people lives. Even if Marcos increase the economy of our country. He still like Hitler, killing people with his will.

This is in reaction to the comment of MJane Somao-i I disagree to transfer Marcos remains in hero's cemetery. I admit that he was a very smart and capable leader and he also did well in improving Philippines economy. Yet, he also cause the Philippines in chaos as he lift the martial law and turn the government completely under his control. Our country has suffered during his regime resulting in EDSA's Revolution.

I choose NOT TO TRANSFER the remains of the late Pres. Ferdinand Marcos. It is true that he made a lot of changes and improvements to education, cultural, establishment & infrastructure, peace & order and specially to the economy of the country but despite all this, that doesn't mean his to be considered as a hero and be buried to heroes cemetery, some individuals here in our country also did the same thing like building hospitals, schools, establishments & infrastructure, maintaining peace & order and also help improved the economy and life of others but they're not acknowledged as heroes or to be buried in heroes cemetery. The differences is that Ferdinand Marcos is the President of the country and used his power to create sudden changed either good or bad, took the wealth of the country (called today as, "nakaw na yaman"), borrowed large amount of money to international/private individuals (that made us "lubog sa utang") imposed Martial Law to gain more power and made democracy to dictatorship, abused of power, violence, injustices, many are oppressed & deprived of rights & due process of law and many lost their lives for fighting against his dictatorship. Those are clear evidence that he must not acknowledge as a hero or be transfer his remains to heroes cemetery and this is also for the sake of the family and loveones of those who made the sacrifices.

In my very own opinion, Ferdinand Marcos remains should be buried in Heroes Cemetery ,because he was the greatest leader of the Republic of the Philippines. When he was the president he lifted the country from poverty by implementing programs , different infrastructure, social services, and make the country more productive.

this my reaction to the comment of Willard Reta. i choose former pres marcos to be transferred to the libingan ng mga bayani because simply he was once a great president of the republic of the philippines, every leader possesed great responsibilties and he instilled good morale to every filipino people thus others treat it as a cruelty. martial is not just prohibitng rights of people it makes people responsible and respectful onto what our law is saying.. we are just looking at the bad side where the bodies of his regimen did.. we are not looking at the bright side where in he put up establishments to provide services to people just like the heart center of the phil. we barely see what the good side of his deeds because there a lot of people in his time who is hungry for power.. we are just human being weve made mistakes and we will need to face the consequences of every deeds that weve done!.. for me marcos already faced his consequences, he was already in a freezer coffin for a long time.. right now we dont have to argue with this because the people involved that we so called the dictator already passed away and the issue that we will need to face right now is the struggle of country. let me just say this before i end this debate that we belong to God fearing country where in we were raised to live by the teaching of God where He qoutes we should know how to forgive others as i forgiven you..

This is in reaction to the comment of Fabella, Jessica F. I disagree with her. Although Marcos has done great things here in the country during his regime, what people can see now are the things that he has done that makes a lot of people suffer. His regime is considered as the biggest nightmare of every Filipinos. He made a lot of Filipino suffer when he declared the martial law and suspended the Writ of Habeas Corpus.

In my opinion, President Ferdinand Marcos shouldn't buried in Heroes Cemetery, because during his presidency, corruption and human rights was abuses especially when he declared the Martial law. During the Darkness of Martial Law many people died and put to jail just because they were seen as threats to the power of Marcos. also if Marcos will buried in Heroes Cemetery, it will be an insult to those million people who marched on EDSA during the People Power Revolution for the exile of Marcos. He is also a dictator who almost destroy the institution of the Philippines by his greediness to power. So I don't think that he is deserve to buried in the Heroes Cemetery.

this reaction to the comment of John Azel D. De Loreto I agree to his comment that Marcos should not go to the Heroes Cemetery, because in his regime many people die. and in my opinion the people who sacrifice their life to save the country are those who buried in the Heroes Cemetery. Is Marcos save the Philippines??, I don't think so,.

This in reaction to the comment of Fabella, Jessica F. I disagree with her. We all know that during his regime the economy of our country had risen. We also know that during his regime a lot of people had suffered because of the declaration of martial law and a lot people were being killed without due process of law.

This is a reaction to the comment of Millie Anne Volante I think your statements are not enough to become reasons because there are also politicians that established many works. In case of Marcos, it’s his responsibility to make those projects but it’s not included to make a Martial Law. He committed many crimes and for me, he’s not a hero.

I think Ferdinand Marcos remains should not be transfer to heroes' cemetery. It's no doubt that he was a good leader of our country, but a definition of a hero for me is someone who is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the sake of others and obviously Marcos did not! He took away the Filipinos right to freedom during his time.

This is in response to the comment of Jorwill H. David. Naniniwala din ako na hindi dapat ilipat sa libingan ng mga bayani ang labi ni Marcos kasi sarili lang naman nya ang inisip nya nung panahon nya kaya nga sila yumaman ng ganun diba?

This is in response to the comment of Jorwill H. David. I disagree with him 'coz I think Marcos did a great contribution to the peace and order of our country during his term.

This is in response to the comment of Jorwill H. David. Hindi na dapat ilipat sa libingan ng mga bayani si Marcos, naging isang malaking bangungot lang naman sya sa kasaysayan natin at hindi naging isang bayani.

For me,Former President Ferdinand Marcos should not be transferred to Heroes Cemetery because when we say hero it is the one who protect his motherland, and willing to do the best for the sake of others. Yes, I admit that during the government of Pres.Ferdinand Marcos was the great economy because of wide programs of infrastructure development and economic reform, but in that development there is also a corruption and human rights violation. So therefore doing like violations is not be called heroic.

This is a reaction to the comment of Jay Viterbo. I agree with Jay because Marcos murdered many Filipino that oppose his administration like Ninoy Aquino.

This is a reaction to the comment of Jay Viterbo. I agree with Jay because former president Marcos implement Martial Law which leads to his dictatorship. He is a great leader but he abused his power.

This is a reaction to the comment of Jay Viterbo. I disagree with Jay because he leads the Philippines to a great country for example he makes the value of peso equal to dollar, etc.

No. Marcos shouldn't be transferred. Because hero is a person, who is admired for courage or noble qualities. Yes, may be he had contributed a lot for the Philippines to grow like other countries. Yet he still did a non-heroic deeds. He violates human rights and torture military men. He for me is not a hero. So, he should not be transferred to a "Heroes" Cemetery.

In my opinion Ferdinand Marcos should not be transferred to the Heroes Cemetery, because up to now the marcos family has not asked to be forgiven, no apology for their heinous crimes they have committed, in fact they are still intransigent, unremorseful, mayabang, still living in perpetual denial about it. there must be justice first before reconciliation. An accounting must first be made. Their loot must be returned, their victims must be fairly compensated and an apology to the filipino people must be made. Unfortunately, this will only be a dream because the marcos family together with their cohoots have returned to power and even entertaining a return to malacanang. heaven forbids, we already have a GMA, whose role models are Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. let us not make ourselves the laughing stock of the world

This is in Reaction to the Comment of Cyndee Cahilig I'd say Marcos should Not be Transferred. NO. he did a bigger job of making the country a mess than actually improving it. The first few years of his reign was indeed fruitful in aspects, but as the years progressed, there was nothing "heroic" about the suffering & humiliation the country endured. he may have the credentials for being a President as well as his many other honors, but it takes more than that to actually SERVE a country. For all the pain the nation suffered throughout his reign, it would be insulting even to the fishes in the sea if Marcos' body was dumped there, let alone alone be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

This is in Reaction to the Comment of Cyndee Cahilig. Marcos should be buried at "Libingan ng mga Bayani". I believe that we can't deny that despite the turmoil that happened at the latter part of his term, we could still consider him as one of the good leaders of the country. Some might be considering his term as dark age of the Philippine government especially during the martial law but there are also those who believe that it was also in his term when our country is in the Golden Era. Let's be forgiving and optimistic enough to look at the good side that the former president had made made for the country rather than his flaws. Let's give him peace. I believe that wherever he is, he was longing for his body finally lay into rest.

This is in reaction to the Comment of Cyndee Cahilig. He doesn't deserve to be Transferred. With regards to Ferdinand Marcos Sr., what he did not only affected a sector of the Philippines but the country and the people as a whole. What he did wasn't only financial but it had cost the principles, pride and most especially lives of our countrymen. There is no reason to give honor and recognition to Ferdinand Marcos' Sr. He definitely doesn't deserve it after what he did to the Filipinos.

All of his works from the past was not a HEROIC deed but, he only did that for the sake of the nation, for us not to be defiled by foreign countries. Filipinos retaliated for what he had done. I'll say no, for his remnant to be moved.

ferdinand marcos should not transfer in the heroe's cemetery. because it is a cemetery for the heroes that made a history for the sake of the philippines. ferdinand marcos over ruled the philippines and it is not a good characteristic of a heroe.

this my reaction to Anidah Sayre Launte I agree dahil hindi matutumbasan ang ginawang pamumuno niya dito sa bansa kaya nararapat lang siya na mahanay sa libingan ng mga bayani.
