Ferdinand Marcos Remains: Be transferred to Heroes’ Cemetery or Not?

FERDINAND EMMANUEL EDRALIN MARCOS, SR. (September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989) was a Filipino leader and President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He was a lawyer, member of the Philippine House of Representatives (1949–1959) and a member of the Philippine Senate (1959–1965). He was the Senate President from 1963–1965.
While in power, he implemented wide-ranging programs of infrastructure development and economic reform. However, some claim that this was largely overshadowed by his authoritarian way of ruling the country after 1972. His administration was marred by massive corruption, nepotism, political repression, and human rights violations.

Possible reasons for the proposal to transfer his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         His assertion of Martial Law maintained peace and order to the community.
·         New society-educational reforms, labor forms, land reforms social services were made.
·         He built more schools, hospitals and infrastructure than any of his predecessors combined.
·         Crony capitalism was promoted which was intended to redistribute monopolies traditionally owned by Chinese and Mestizo oligarchs to Filipino businessmen.
·         He promoted Filipino culture and nationalism through the establishment of (CCP) Cultural Center of the Philippines in accordance to Executive Order No. 30 s. 1966.

Possible reasons against the transfer of his remains to heroes’ cemetery:
·         Martial Law was the dark times. He was then a human rights violator, for the tortures among prisoners made by military men.
·         The writ of habeas corpus was suspended; the military picked up and incarcerated many innocent civilians on trumped up charges of sedition. More often than not, these people were convicted without trial, and denied the due process of law.
·         To help finance a number of economic development projects, the Marcos government borrowed large amounts of money from international lenders, making the Philippines one of the most indebted countries in Asia.
·         In practice of the crony capitalism, it led to graft and corruption via bribery, racketeering, and embezzlement. It is estimated that Marcos alone stole at least $5 billion from the Filipino treasury.
·         There were misuse and misapplication of funds “for the construction of the Film Center, where X-rated and pornographic films are exhibited, contrary to public morals and Filipino customs and traditions.

Marcos has fame of his tragic involvement to community that brought innocent people a bondage of cruelties to a military-run government. In addition of his leadership he never put the welfare of the state an ease. The diminution of freedom to perform which the value of individuals surrounded of melancholy to the deprivation of human rights therefore Marcos must not transfer to the heroes cemetery.

Ferdinand Marcos' remains should be transferred into the heroes' cemetery. Although we know that he has been known as brutal and ruthless to other people, it does not mean that he cannot be on the heroes' cemetery. I believe that as a SOLDIER, he had served his country for many years and I think that one of the requirements for someone to be buried in the heroes' cemetery is that "he should have been a soldier who served honorably."

In my opinion, Ferdinand Marcos has his right to be transferred to the Heroes' Cemetery. Even Marcos was a graft and a corrupt person as others say, He still made good things in our country and still used the money in right things such as building hospitals and infrastructures. For me, the fact that he was strict of the Filipinos is a good act as a ruler and it was like a step on disciplining the Filipinos.

Despite the fact that he's my favorite president due to his outstanding works, I would say NO. Being buried in Hero's Cemetery means you are a national hero and national heroes are people acknowledged by everyone. The disagreement to him being buried there is so huge that the decision became debatable and therefore if he's buried there, chaos and disappointments would arise; that is not what a true national hero wants.

Ferdinand Marcos remains: Be transferred to Heroes’ Cemetery or Not? Why not,we all know that marcos implemented wide-ranging programs of infrastructure development like Maharlika Highway, Marcos Highway at San Juanico Bridge, cultural center of the philippine (CCP), manila film center, folk arts theatre, national arts center at school for the arts. because of this, he called him "The Architect of the New Society". He also send OCWs or overseas contract workers in order to increased our economy and decreased the population of nonworking filipino and he declared Martial Law to maintained peace and order to the community. But during his terms, he overpowered his ruling and not able to managed his people. Being corrupt is part of political history. But in this case we never mind it, the reason why his remains should transfer to heroes cemetery is simply because his a soldier, because every soldier deserves to be buried in heroes cemetery although your bad or good.

No! Ferdinand Marcos does not deserve to be put to rest in Libingan ng mga Bayani because Marcos is no hero. He was a dictator. I hope there's libingan ng mga Presidente aside from Libingan ng mga Bayani. Not all President are Heroes. Not all Heroes are President.

Although Ferdinand Marcos is one of the great and smart leader/president of the Philippines, I would DISAGREE. There's no doubt that he uplift the country from poverty by implementing programs, social services, different infrastructure, and many more but by the time martial law was passed he violates the human rights of his people, these law was preventing them to speak freely or express their own opinion, and mostly he dictates the people, an act of supremacy. He did not realize that people was the reason why he's in that position, for me HERO is a man of protector or defender so not all people would want him to call hero., it means Marcos shouldn't be transferred in Heroes' Cemetery simply because he don't deserved it.

Ferdinand Marcos is a genius dictator. he has many plans for the future he arranged it accordingly. if he is just given more time. his plans would be perfect. the only problem with his style of leadership he is an enforcer of his wants. his plan is a must and he doesn't care if it is humanely wrong. about the corruption issue it started many years ago "not only his family" and also the next leaders followed until now. so it's very wrong to say that the marcos leadership brought the philippines to poverty. To be called a hero you must do something that will promulgate the common good of his people. in the case of marcos it will but it will not justify the means. So my answer is no.

I don't think its a good idea that our former President Ferdinand Marcos be transferred to heroes cemetery because in his 21 yrs term of being the President, We all know that Filipinos didn't felt and experienced the true meaning of democracy. He gave limitations on our rights and deprived our freedom of expressions.Although at some point, Pres. Marcos contributed great things for the improvement of our country but the question is? is it enough to consider that He possess the characteristics of being one of our Hero? definitely NO!!...why?..simply because that great things is just part of his duties and responsibilities of being the President.

I AGREE TO ALMAZAN. Marcos did a brutal dictatorship when he was the president of the country that proves he is not qualified to be considered as a hero. Now, about the anomalies of any other heroes..the question is ..How much these anomalies affect the countrymen as well as the country itself?

This is the reaction to the comment of HONEYLOU CASTILLO - Ako ay sumasangayon sa mga tinuran ni Ms. Honeylou Castillo.

This is in reaction to the comment of Ma-Coy. - i also agree that Marcos must be transferred in the Heroes Cemetery. yes he was rude by his kind of leadership but we Filipinos was amazed by his true dedication towards his work in his regime. we must let go of the bad things he did because that's already in the past. move on and think in the positive way that he contribute for our country. he deserves to be treated well.

I'm slightly disagree to transfer the remains of our beloved former president Ferdinand Marcos in Heroes Cemetery. Even though his a great leader or dictator and he makes the filipino become a good followers and the our country become peaceful. but enrile is traitor the good governance is gone. According to the law and base on my observation,. Marcos is not qualified to transfer his remains because his not a HERO,.

yes I Agree..because he is the best president. During his presidency, Philippines is a well respected country at pati ibang bansa ginagaya ang ating government system . He established the ASEAN, he only thinks the best for the less fortunate people (masa).

I disagree with your answer. I think Marcos deserves to be buried in the heroes cemetery because of his contributions for the country. Though filipino people wanted democrary, that doesn't necessarily mean it is for the brighter future. I still do believe that democracy is the lowest type of governmentand what we need is someone that will rule the country without any hindrances from those who knows nothing about politics. And I think Marcos has done enough things to prove that he is the leader that the philippines needed and I do cobsider him as a hero.

I'd say NO, even though he had helped the country BEFORE to be an asian economic contender, it was also his (and/or his wife's) actions that brought the Philippines down. Due to his decision of putting up Martial Law, a lot of his cronies had taken advantage of the situation. The Philippines is known for being forgiving (or forgetting, whichever you choose) that some even elected his wife, Imelda Marcos, as congresswoman. I hope they do not forget why Marcos, at the first place, wasn't allowed to be buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani. I am also wondering why a suicide by Angelo Reyes while he was under investigations with a current issue is allowed to be buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani. It really does make no sense, perhaps this is why the Philippines is 3rd world and the stricter countries are 1st, because the Philippine government always make illogical decisions..

yes that's right his remains must stay where it is and must not be transferred to the heroes cemetery. he just not simply deserve to be in that prestige cemetery and he simply does not belong there. yes, his accomplishments says a lot, but it is still nothing compared to what he did to the filipino people during the dark times of the hellacious martial law.

Although Ferdinand Marcos is one of the great and smart leaders/presidents of the Philippines, I would DISAGREE. There's no doubt that he uplift the country from poverty by implementing programs, social services, different infrastructure, and many more but by the time martial law was passed he violated the human rights of his people, this law was preventing them to speak freely or express their own opinion, and mostly he dictated the people, an act of supremacy. para sa akin hindi sya karapatdapat na ilagay sa heroes cementery dahil yan ang dahilan kung bakit halos lahat ng mga filipino na nakaranas ng martial law.

In my judgement, I utterly disagree the transferring of Ferdinand Marcos’ remains to Heroes’ Cemetery for just one basic simple reason that rendered all the power and highest authority to lead and govern people, he’s had it abused and overspent. Given the facts of the great visions and achievements he had planned and hoped for our country in future, the transitions which is supposed to be wonderfully projected, ironically, it turn out to be the worst times for he’s completely consumed of the power and harshly tried to control everything on his very own hands making his people suffered indescribably in many ways which is basically enough to say the good things he had done is incomparable to what he had became. Heroes are conjecture as a man admired with his goals, achievements and noble qualities that until to his very last breath, he’s done his utmost to do the right and good which Marcos can never be classified to be for he has chosen domination over fairness resulting in not promoting the common good for people.

I agree that the remains of the Former President Ferdinand Marcos should be transferred in the Heroes' Cemetery, because even if he was brutal in his term he made a mark in our Philippine History. He contributed many productive things in our country and also he was a good leader in his term. We should not only look at the negative side of a person, yet, we should also appreciate what he had done for our country and for our fellow men. Also, to lessen the time of commotions between the Marcos family and the government. Marcos has been dead and been sealed in a glass freezer for a very long time. Maybe it's time for him to be buried. Forget about the pass, what is important is the present.

He should be buried to the heroes cemetery we achieved a lot under his administration. he opened our eyes in the true meaning of kamay na bakal that everyone of us was being aware of the word discipline.

he should not be buried in the heroes cemetery his regimen extremely demoralized the citizens. During his time Filipinos live their lives in a shadow of a nightmare knowing that any police or military personnel can shoot you for no reason.

i agree to bury Ferdinand Marcos to the heroes cemetery during his term he created projects for longer term goal, crime rate decreased to the lowest level. he executes martial law to make this country a better place to live.

He was one of the most dictator leader of the country. Many people was killed in his time.

He was one of the most dictator leader of the country. Many people was killed in his time.

I beg to disagree. He's one of the reason why Philippines was in danger when it comes to financial stability on his time.

Today we all know that Marcos was a great President for his uncommon way of Leadership, but many of us did not appreciate what He has done for almost a decades, and now He end up not burying in Libingan ng mga Bayani. For me its unfair because Marcos is a great leader He make Philippines no. 1 in ASIA in His time, the value of Philippine money is higher than the US currency. But for all the things He has done people is always looking for all the bad things he made, for being a Dictator not a Democrat. Well Pnoy also disagree that the remains of Marcos should not be transferred at Libingan ng mga Bayani, for me maybe one of the many reasons is HE TAKE IT PERSONALLY, because of the death of His father and the fight between His mother, He is taking back everything in revenge for the Marcos Family, and common! Lets move on, lets forgive Marcos for everything, there's a lot of Filipino politician that is worse than Marcos, but yet they are running for any position and people are voting for them, but for what Marcos has done we could not appreciate all the INCREDIBLE things He has done.

I believe that Marcos should not be buried because at the very first place Marcos' family and cronies looted so much wealth from the country that to this day investigators have difficulty determining precisely how many billions of dollars were stolen. Meaning, Marcos should suffer. Thief!

Marcos’ body should place in proper, or should I say be buried. That is because, even though he was ACCUSED of being involved in the assassination of his primary political opponent, Benigno Aquino, Jr. He’s still a human and have the rights to be respect.

Even though marcos did good things he still do things that people didn't like. all people should agree before he will be buried.

I disagree to her , because we all know that marcos take his responsibility to his country he do the things that can help and discipline his people.

I agree to her because marcos take advantage to his power he abused pilipino people and take the wealth of his own country.

I agree because marcos has the great records of being a president, he is a great man who stand for his country, he do things safe and effectively.

I myself will say marcos is a hero , because as i saw he did his job to take care of his surroundings and his people, even though we thought that his taking advantage of his power, but we think wrong. he used his power to make sure that his own country was safe.

kevin was right ! even though marcos was acuse, he did great for his country he serve well and take his responsibility, in fact he did all that to make sure that his country will be above all other countries. also we don't have the right evidence that he was the mastermind of ninoy's assasination.

On my own opinion, it is okay that his remains will be transferred in the heroes cemetery. According to the former AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Fidel V. Ramos and Former President Corazon C. Aquino, along with the members of the military, the following persons entitled to be interred at Heroes Cemetery: * Medal of Valor awardees: * The President of the Philippines as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines: * The secretaries of National Defense: * Veterans of the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the First and Second World, as well as recognized Guerrilla; * Government dignitaries, statesmen, national artists and other deceased persons whose internment has been approved by the commander-in-chief, congress or the secretary of National Defense * Widows of former president. (wikipedia.org) We should put in our mind that former president Marcos was a former soldier, a guerrilla fighter during world war II and a former president of the Philippines. I think his remains should better be transferred in the heroes cemetery because he had attained the requirements to be transferred there. Some of the people argued the he should not be transferred there because of the declaration of Martial Law, suspension of the Writ Habeas Corpus, etc. during his regime. But I think now is the time for all of us to forgive and forget what has been done by former President Marcos. Past is already past even though forgiving him is really hard. Forgiving a person is sometimes a way for a better future for everyone of us. If God can forgive how much more us. Lets make our past part of the present but never let ruin our future.

Ferdinand Marcos is our late president and I admit that during his time, the economy of our country was at its best. But a real hero is not someone who would hurt and do the worst thing he can to stay in the position of being the president just for the sake of his own good. A hero in heart knows what best for his countrymen and is willing to do the best he can to protect and serve his motherland. Therefore, i am against the proposal of transferring Marcos in Hero's Cemetery.

In my opinion the remains of former president Ferdinand Marcos must not transfer to the heroes cemetery. We all know that Ferdinand Marcos was a great president in terms of making our country successful. But he is also a dictator, he proclaim Martial Law so that he become the one who has power in our country. He also violate many human rights when someone disobey his orders.

For me, Former President Ferdinand Marcos should not be transffered to Heroe's Cemetry because he is not a hero. For me HERO is a man of protector, someone whose actios are worth looking up to, someone who has compassion, someone who served as an inspiration and someone who is willing to sacrifice what he was for the good of the many. Even though Ferdinand Marcos is an intellectual and capable person, the great and smart President of the Philippine, he did a lot of things to improve and make the country productive, and who had the great plans for the country, but we cannot consider him as a hero because at the time of Martial Law he violates the human rights of his people, these law was preventing them to speak freely or express their own opinion and lastly he dictates the peole an act of supremacy..

I think, it's about time that Ferdinand Marcos remains should be placed to Heroes' Cemetery. He's a former president and it's also the mass who voted for him. He's a president with many contributions in our society, these help not only people on his time but up to present like LRT, CCP, hospitals, schools, etc. Admit it or not, because of his decision of Martial Law, people became disciplined.

for me, oo napakarami ngang ginawang mabuti ni former President Marcos , yet andun pa rin yung nag violate siya ng law at against humans act yung na implement niya . a law may be harsh but its the law , meANINng the onlu punishment niya na kaharapin is not to buried him in heroes cemetery kasi ang laki ng pagkakamaling nagawa niya sa pamumuno niya. corruption ,martial law, at iba pa. pero kung tutuusin dapt na matagala na siyang nalibing para naman talagang malagay na sya sa katahimikan.

This is in Reaction to thee comment of MJane Somao-i Yes he's remains should be transferred in Hero's cemetery because he became a soldier and president.

I disagree in transferring Ferdinand Marcos remains to Heroes Cemetery. although former president Ferdinand Marcos was a great leader, in fact the performance of our country was at its best, but we could not deny the fact that he made a democratic country into a dictatorship. A hero is someone that should protect and serve the people. During the martial law many have suffered, died and had mysteriously disappeared, he had the power over the country. Ferdinand Marcos had done many great things, but we cannot disregard those which had suffered because of him.

This is in reaction to the comment of MJane Somao-i Dapat lang din syang ilibing sa doon kasi nung panahon nya, nabawasan naman ang mga krimen.

This is a reaction to comment of Millie Anne Volante. The vote of the many people and the amount of projects created is not how I will measure a Hero. I did not see the sacrifice and compassion in his leadership. His will to improve the Philippines is good. But his idea on how to do it turns me off. He should be respected as our former president. But let as also respect the real heroes of our nation. Heroes who sacrifice a lot for our country. Heroes who showed compassion for the Filipinos.
