Job Hunting: Tools and Techniques

Getting ready for a job search? This guide will help you on how to complete job application and become employed.

Resume

Consider your resume a job hunting tool, design your resume to catch and captivate the employer’s interest, the immediate purpose of which is to secure job interview. Take note that your resume is not just a chronological record of work experience. Its your sales ad.  You have only 10 seconds, more or less, to show the reader that your resume is worth a second look.

Your resume is highly personal. Only you, can organize, write and rewrite it.  It’s a boo-boo to ask somebody to write your biodata. So learn to write a power resume that is effective and can assure you of a job interview

Some pointers in writing a job-winning resume

Begin with soul searching – evaluate your past, the activities you were in, the skills you have cultivated, and the achievements you have earned.

Honesty is the best policy – state facts and only facts. Be accurate in mentioning dates. “ Find out what a man wants and make a deal with him”

Analyze data and organize them – your resume must be ‘crisp’ and must have a punch, a kick and deep impact.

No negatives- remember, your resume is your personal promo. Create the impression that you are a doer, not a somebody who just sits and waits

Edit, re-edit, and rewrite your draft – your resume should be complete, clear and concise. The style must be formal. Avoid personal pronouns like, I, me, my. Make good use of capitalization, bold types, bullets, underlining, etc.

Never send a resume with erasures – sufficient spacing between data helps create a clean impression. Single space all text, and double space every paragraph. Stay away from a long paragraphs. Always put your name on the second page if there is a second page.

Vital Parts of a GOOD Resume

NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT NUMBERS, AND POSITION DESIRED

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

WORK EXPERIENCE (IF YOU HAD)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (interest, special activities, awards/achievements)

Note: Do not offer reference yet, you may instead state “References are furnished upon request”.

Inexperienced or young jobseekers`

Have you participated in a student government? Become one of its officers? Were you the president?  Have you been actively participated in any school activities or programs? Have been a dean's lister? A staffer in school paper? Joined debates, speech, or quiz show?

Make your resume a picture of achievements and accomplishments

Preparation for a Job Interview

Learn everything you can about the company. Review your resume and your competencies. Assemble all the papers you need. Finally, a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and plenty of travel time

Punctuality

Arrive on time A last minute rush means you will arrive flustered and tense. The important thing is you arrive at the location of your interview about 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment.

Professional Appearance

Decide well what you wear before the day of your interview. Make sure all the buttons and zipper works. Be comfortable with what you wear. Finally, take care not to walk into the room laden with all your belongings.

First Impression

Relax and appear confident. Greet the interviewer by name. Introduce yourself in a relaxed and confident manner. Do not sit down unless you are not asked to do so.

The rule of the game is to be your natural self- a little tense but willing to listen and learn, nervous but honest and hardworking.

Body language

Avoid small repetitive movements, like waggling your feet, smoothing your hair. Do not turn away from the interviewer, do not appear frozen, rigid or stiff. Relax and smile. Appear professional at all time. Do not give the interviewer that you are not listening or you are losing interest.

Common question during interview

Tell me something about yourself.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as employee?

What do you like best/least in your past job?

Describe your ideal boss.

How do you think your boss would describe you?

What area(s) of your profession do you seek to improve or develop?

Why did you apply for this job?

Why did you leave your previous job?

What can you offer this company?

What is the most important qualification you possess that would convince me to hire you?

Lets discuss:

1.  What is/are your weak points that may deter you in getting a job. How would you deal with it?

2. (For ME Student) As fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, discuss your competency. (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section)
3. (For ENSE Student) In what field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering you want to practice your competency. Why? Discuss (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section)

Gerald P. Fortus ME 5101 As a fresh graduate and at the same time as a registered mechanical engineer, I can say that i am competent in seeking a job that fits to my course. Since I am graduate of Batangas State University, I can handle things and work on these under pressure. I learned things and I am able to explain them in both theoretical and actual way.I am a skilled student in various engineering software that will be very helpful in the industry or other engineering firms. I am fast learner specially when it deals with the engineering topics.I always keep in mind that learning should not stack in the four corners of classroom. These may be my competencies and edges as well compare to other graduates.

In view with this article, the knowledge I learned and the experience I gained in Mechanical Engineering course are very vital to acquire my competency in the career I have chosen. Computer skills, technical skills, fluency in the use of English Language, creative, innovative, deadline-oriented/time management, ability to work independently and under pressure, are some of my work competitive standpoints. As a fresh graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, to become a part of a progressive and fast-paced organization under the supervision of senior engineers, where knowledge in Mechanical Engineering can be best utilized, is one of my career objectives. This article shows that in every situation, we have to be confident, have a lot of nerve and really do lot of a hard work. According to Steve Jobs- “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know it when you find it.” -Austin M. Cruzat, BSME, ME-5101

As a fresh graduate and a registered mechanical engineer., my competency are: I have an experience on an actual work because after my OJT in STEPAN PHILS. INC., the company absorbed me and encouraged me to continue working for them and I grab that opportunity to experience a true and actual work as an employee on that said company. I also experience to be a working student so i have a background in the real work place. And based on that experience i learn many things on how to act like a professional. How to handle a certain work and to finished that on time/ on to date. I have a good social interaction for a different employee that i encountered when i was there. Good working attitude is one of my biggest asset on that time, i do my best and i want them to be proud of me.

Cris Angelo C. Lawas BSME-5101 As a newly registered mechanical engineer, it is obvious that we wouldn’t be able to present any experience when we apply for a job. But even with this situation of ours, we still have competence to do the job that we will be applying for. First, we can do the job as required, although not on our own, but with the introduction and supervision of a higher authority experienced in the said job. Second, as first time workers, curiosity and seeking for new adventure are what governs our minds and this strives us to accept all challenges that are given to us. Third, we are not really that inexperience. We did have had our On-the-Job Training which is really a big help in introducing the working environment of the jobs soon to be our own. Fourth, we also are not ignorant when it comes to the concepts of each work. We did study each concepts at school. We will just need to understand and see with our own eyes the application of each concepts. Also, to see the reality in each concepts since all concepts at school are assumed ideal. These aspects are the competency of each new RME. These also show that we would be easy to learn the key points of the job and to be taught by the supervisor that will be handling us. New Graduates does not mean inexperienced players. It means Flawed Gems, waiting to be polished and glossed by experience to be a Perfect and Flawless Gem.

As fresh graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, I confident that I can do a lot of things especially in my field because of what I learned in my school (Batangas State University) whether it is theoretical or actual activities. And I’m sure that I will hire in a good position or in high position not because of the name of my school (Batangas State University) but my ability to accomplish a job efficiently and honestly. Since my school is top performing school nationwide it can affect my job hiring but in a good way but I’ll make sure not because of it that I get the job what I’m applying for. Moreover, as a licensed mechanical engineer I do the work professionally to accomplish the assign job in a right step so that’s I can says that I am competency in my job…

I do believe that triumph, as an engineer in this day, requires competence and a combination of management, leadership, effective communication and business skills. Leadership is something that I have naturally and my school ( Grade and High School days) recognized this by electing me as one of the officers, which I believe has further improved my leadership and communication skills. In addition, decision-making is one of the skills I have acquired. Taking the right action, based on what we know, and being responsible for what happens. You can ask other people for their opinions. Most importantly, you must know what else could happen if you don’t do something on time.

As a fresh graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, I can say that I am competent enough in the field that I have chosen. I know for myself that I am equipped not just by theoretical knowledge but also the skills and proper attitude that are essential to the work that I am taking. During our college days, we are not just taught by the theories and practical applications about our study but also how to handle work under pressure and proper time management. We are also trained on how to properly deal with other people which is a very important skill on our workplace. As a fresh graduate, I am more eager to do every task that is given to me and I am open to new ideas and learning that can help me improve myself.

Rowena B. Tenorio BS Mechanical Engineering ME - 5102 Since mechanical engineers from our school are increasing, I guess I should think of other competencies that are not identified by any other mechanical engineers. These competencies will serve as my advantage to my colleagues and these will make sure that I will do my job well and I am suited for the job I am applying for. The competencies possess by me and every other mechanical engineer graduated from our school are Written, Verbal and Graphical Communication; Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Powerpoint, AutoCad and SolidWorks literate; Fluent in English and Filipino; and Effective working in a Team. I’ve identified these compentencies based on my experiences in school essentially when we have our group projects, where everyone in the group is responsible for finishing the task given. The competencies I am uniquely possessing are based on self assessment and experiences where my personal traits are shown. These competencies are Self-Management (I am able to set my schedule according to priorities and importance); Problem-Solving (I finished every challenges and problems step by step); Honesty (My parents taught me well and I always tell what is true); Self-Motivation (I am positively facing every day in my life); Interdisciplinary Skills (I am interacting with people of other professions and disciplines); Commitment and Time Bounded (I am committed to my best and finished the job within the time allotted for it); Flexibility; and Reliability. I am not telling that I will be a perfect employee for I also have imperfections but I will promise that I will do my job very well and will finished every assignment given to me.

Jose Gilbert C. Abagon BS Mechanical Engineering ME-5102 In today’s time, where every country in the world is facing the problem of overpopulation, there is more employee than job offers. This scenario always leads to only one result, competition. Competition has always been a part of people’s natural way of life. We compete to survive. That’s why it is the greatest weapon a fresh graduate and registered mechanical engineer to gain different knowledge and skills that can be used in the everlasting competition in the real industrial world. As future engineers it is important to know our strengths or competency to easily find a job once we passed the board exam. I, as a fresh graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, gained a lot of knowledge and traits that I know are very beneficial to me. I have gained them from my instructors, colleagues, and own experiences. During my past years, I have become more knowledgeable in developing my technical skill, I have learned communicating clearly and concisely in writing and even in verbal. I have develop and exercise teamwork with my colleagues for I have learned that it is one of the major factor in doing a job. I have also developed my problem solving abilities which covers not only mathematical problems but as well as situational problems. I have also experienced leading my co-students in some activities and learned how to be a good leader. In over-all I believe that I can be very competent once I join the work force. Yes, I know that there are many things that I haven’t learned and I have my own weaknesses. But, as I come closer to achieving my dream of becoming a mechanical engineer I know that with the proper guidance of my instructors, family and colleagues, by believing in myself but keeping my feet on the ground, and by always believing to God Father Almighty, I will be able to surpass it and become successful in my profession.

Competency-defined as the ability to do something effectively and successfully. As a newly graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, I can show competency by showing willingness to learn and accept new learnings, especially in job applications. Fresh graduates usually don't have much knowledge on dealing with problems concerning the profession and proper way of communication. With the acquired skills and proper mentality towards comprehensiveness, I can prove that I am competent in handling the challenges that will come in my way. Most importantly, I should bear in my mind that an engineer's competency is not just measured by his/her academic achievements and success, but it is through one's determination and utmost proficiency that envelop his/her capability to surpass other's competency level.

Being competent means that you are able to fulfill tasks effectively. Solving problems may be easier through one's own experience. As a freshly graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, even I don't have much experience in the field, I can show that I am competent by showing willingness to accept new learnings and being eager to learn new things and techniques. New information that may be helpful to me must be tolerated and carefully studied. And, I must not rely just on my academic skills acquired from the university. I must prove that I am determined to learn and willing to improve my skills and increase my confidence to attain a superior competence compared to others.

As a newly registered mechanical engineer, one of the most challenging things to do next is to find a job suitable for me and in to my interest. I am applying for your company because I believe that I possess the qualifications for the job position you are offering. I can also say that your company is the best choice where I can utilize the knowledge that I gained from my previous studies and enhance my personality as a career person. As an employee, I can work well both independently or as a part of a team. Also, I am open for new learnings that the company has to offer.

A successful mechanical engineering career is the result of a building process that starts during the undergraduate years, if not earlier. I think, knowledge from the subjects is not a main part of this thing. It is the application of the knowledge that counts, which, i think is what the school lacks. The attitude and situational responsive instincts will determine who is a better worker. As a fresh graduate of BatStateU, I can proudly say that it being a graduate from this school is enough to be competitive. The main reason is its consistency in being the top performing school in Mechanical Engineering.

As a fresh graduate, I possess the knowledge of the new world. It is a fact that today, data is shared like it has never been before; the knowledge today is said to be obsolete three years later. The world needs someone who's been through that change; someone who can adapt to that change. Someone who also possess the necessary sets of skill that are needed in today's world, a must is flexibility. Someone who value and fear a higher being; for those who fear that someone knows respect. Someone who inspires others to pursue set goals. This is my competency.
