Who should be the Philippine National Hero?

IF WE WERE to choose only ONE national hero who is best fitting to be regarded as ‘THE’ Philippine national hero, who would it be among the following? Would it be ...

JOSÉ Protasio RIZAL Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896)

He was a Filipino nationalist and reformist and the most prominent advocate for reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He was the inspiration and thus wrongly implicated as the leader of the Katipunan Revolution, and that led to his execution on December 30, 1896, now celebrated as Rizal Day. (Read: Jose Rizal's Contribution)

As a political figure, José Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan. He was a proponent of achieving Philippine self-government peacefully through institutional reform rather than through violent revolution, and would only support "violent means" as a last resort. (Wikipedia)

ANDRÉS BONIFACIO y de Castro (30 November 1863 – 10 May 1897)

He was a Filipino nationalist and revolutionary. He is often called "the father of the Philippine Revolution". Bonifacio was a founder and later Supremo ("supreme leader") of the Katipunan movement which sought the independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution.

He is considered a de facto national hero of the Philippines, and is also considered by some Filipino historians to be the first President, but he is not officially recognized as such. (Wikipedia)

EMILIO AGUINALDO y Famy (22 March 1869 – 6 February 1964)

He was a Filipino general, politician, and independence leader. He had an instrumental role during the Philippines' revolution against Spain, and the subsequent Philippine–American War or War of Philippine Independence that resisted American occupation ... (continue reading)

Aguinaldo became the Philippines' first president. He was also the youngest (at age 28) to have become the country's president, the longest-lived former president (having survived to age 94) and the president to have outlived the most number of successors. (Wikipedia)

This is my answer to the argument of Zeny Cervantes.

Answer for Hanna Plaza: Many years had already passed. I don't see a reason why we should still debate about this kind of issue. It's already obvious that majority of the Filipinos have chosen Rizal as our national hero so why bother discuss this. I know that some Filipinos want Andres Bonifacio to be our national hero but can't you see that there are more to look at Rizal because of his adventurous life. There are more things you can learn, improve, and develop in using Rizal as the Filipinos' role model of the country.

I believe that Rizal and Bonifacio are both peerless and cannot be compared, that they are simply different pages in the same book. While Rizal stroke using the power of the pen for enforcing his dreams and ideals, Bonifacio used his dagger in an attempt to save his people from chaos and corruption. Both having the same goal, that is - liberation from oppression. Now that we have inherited our "democracy", although it has many defects, but we have it nonetheless, I think that Rizal and his works is timely for this age especially for students, and therefore he should be our national hero.He believes that we can make a difference by educating ourselves and in turn, the society. Moreover, we can use his life adventures in our way of living. He asserts that there are things significant beyond personal gain and happiness. One of Rizal's important run is fighting against "Filipino ignorance", things that are of paramount importance in curing the "Social Cancer" and creating intelligent citizens for maintaining a successful democracy. On the other hand, I think that honoring Bonifacio as our standard is only applicable in times of war, where the use of force as the last resort. As for Aguinaldo,I think he is out of the question.

I agree to you that it should be Bonifacio. Because he courageously fought for the freedom of our country by battling against spaniards.

For me Andres Bonifacio, should be proclaimed as the Philippine National Hero. There is a dictum "If you want peace, then give up your freedom, but if you want freedom then prepare for war.." In other words, sometimes people tolerate others to take advantage of them in order to avoid conflict, but if you want to fight for the right, then action needs to done. Andres Bonifacio and his comrades took the matter in their hands, because they knew that you can't fight for your rights legally if the system itself is flawed because the citizens are flawed. Yes, Jose Rizal and Emilio Aguinaldo are great men, but what are they behind their pen and their men? I don't think anyone knows how it feels to run to the battlefield, look your enemy in the eye, and confront them.

In my opinion, I'll choose Andres Bonifacio. 'Cause Rizal just wanted a reform that will make the Spaniards and Filipinos equal in the eye of law while Bonifacio's goal was to separate the Filipinos from the Spaniards and have its own independence and government. Bonifacio's goal served as the stepping stone for the Kapitunan to fight for the freedom of our country.

This is my answer to the post of Jorge Bassig: For me Andres Bonifacio, should be proclaimed as the Philippine National Hero. my answer to Jorge Bassig Jose Rizal should be our national hero. I tend to disagree with-----.He is trying to say that Bonifacio produces more results because of using force. I don't think that whether one does wield pen or bolo has an assurance of obtaining freedom. In other words, Rizal and Bonifacio are different persons with different kind of methods, but with the same goal. The saying "In living a life in pursuit for revenge. Dig two graves."has another meaning - no one is winner in a war, everything will be a collateral, your parents, children, friends and relatives - people who are close to you will be thrown into upheaval and their life will be in danger, this is the burden of living a life in pursuit of force. Filipinos might even turn against each other. Because freedom in this way has a price. Jose Rizal knew all of this, even he saw all of this - oppression , corruption, and lawlessness he didn't lose his mind but instead was filled with hope that there is something that can be done without using force in order to save his people. No one has the same determination as Rizal, nine women came through Rizal's life but in the end, he rejected his own happiness for the sake of service to his people. Rizal refelected a perfect Filipino, one who fights for the truth by educating himself and eradicating ignorance.

in response to the question of Jorge Bassig My opinion is that we might have a problem in selecting a national hero, I think that we shouldn't limit ourselves in deciding among Rizal, Bonifacio and Aguinaldo. Taking all things into condsideration, for example, I don't think that the people of Mindanao, or specifacally the Bangsamoro will be excited to have a Tagalog hero. The point is that our nation is a melting pot, borne from many kinds of culture, race, ethnicity, an archipelagic nation, for some time fought its own wars, and hence its own regional hero. Also, we have to determine the criteria in picking one on whether we weigh a philospher over a revolutionist or the other way around.

Jose Rizal should be the National hero because the way he fought for our freedom is not that violent but yet very influencial to every mind and hearts of the Filipinos. He really been an inspiration to all of us. His hardwork, affirmation and courage to things are the things I idiolize about him.

In my opinion, Dr. Jose Rizal is way better than Andres Bonifacio because he fought through his letters, writings and novels; He used to be a Teacher, Artist and a Doctor and because of that, he has gained more knowledge than Andres Bonifacio who preferred armed revolution to fight for independence which cost more lives.

This is my answer to Eric John Duenas: Andres Bonifacio is the one I chose because even though he's not that rich and didn't attain a high level of education, he still has the heart for our country and fight for its freedom through the only way he knew which has the concept " An eye for an eye."

I think Jose Rizal is our national hero because of his novels, poet, ophthalmologist, journalist, and revolutionary. Beside that he was the author of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

I believe that Jose Rizal is the rightful national hero since he has ignited Philippine nationalism. Without him, Bonifacio and the Katipunan never come into existance.

For me,Dr. Jose Rizal definitely deserves the title 'National Hero' of the Philippines. His sacrifices are quite enough to prove how deserving he is to be called the Philippine National Hero.He also did show exceptional nationalism and patriotism to our country which is like no other, that's why for me, he deserves to be honored.

My answer to Liezelle A. Pinque: Andres Bonifacio also deserve to be the Philippine national hero because of his contributions made for our country. He lead those Filipinos who want to fight for the freedom for our country. He fights the slavery from the Spanish colonial so in the end of the Revolution we got our independence.

My answer to: Liezelle A. Pinque The Philippine national hero for me is Andres Bonifacio the Father of Revolution and the Supreme of the Katipunan. A man of action who organized KKK,which revolt against the Spanish colonial power.

Dr. Jose Rizal for me,is truly deserving to be called as the Philippine National Hero, this is to acknowledge his huge sacrifices and great nationalism.I believe that he is the first Filipino to show such heroic deeds and an extraordinary love to our country that's why for me he must be forever remembered and honored by us,Filipinos as our National Hero.
