Notes in Ethics: 7 Characteristics of a Good Moral Theory

1. A good ethical theory is able to satisfactorily explain why people experience a sense of moral obligation.

2. It is able to account for the moral obligations’ “binding force” and “overriding character.”

3. The worldview endorsed by a good moral theory is capable of accounting for the moral accountability in ethics. (For, otherwise, morality would just be like promulgating a strict state law but without real sanction or punishment for the offenders. In such a condition, there would be no essential difference between following and transgressing the law.)

4. A sensible moral theory is able to explain why it is wrong to just live for self-interest just as we please—why even a powerful person must not ignore the dictates of morality and live in pure self-indulgence.

5. It is able to satisfactorily justify why acts of self-sacrifice and heroism matter in morality.

6. It is able to justify that virtues, such as that of compassion and kindness, are not mere hollow abstractions.

7. A good moral theory does not endorse a relative, self-chosen, flexible morality that one can adjust at will.

I disagree..Morality is not objective. This would imply that everyone would react in the same way to everything. Somebody might not mind if you call him fat while someone else might get offended. In this case you don't know from the reaction. That's what objective morality means. That there are universal laws as to what is right and what is wrong. Even in religion people can't always agree on objective morality.

Yes of course because people is born in a world that nurture by a moral law by the aid of our parents and guardian, since when we're little our parents taught us what our the things that we must do and what we dont do. so because of that we keep that things in our mind and we learn the difference from bad to good.

im agree that there's objective in moral law. without objective in moral law is nonsense. my point is it is better to have God in the moral law to know what is right and wrong in morality. moral without God is not good.

There are still things that we need to learn, and with that there will be different reaction on the same problem and this state that moral objective barely exist but rather Instinct

I agree to the objective of moral law. it is defined as "A moral law that exists independent of human feelings, interpretations, or prejudices." clearly stated that in moral law, whenever feelings it is, still there's objective in moral law because of its independent aspect. moreover, I believe that moral should not be influence by anyone.

DISAGREE!! BECAUSE I THINK WALANG OBJECTIVE MORAL LAW KC LHT NG TAO MAY PAG IISIP KUNG ANO ANG TAMA SA MALI!

hmmm...

No, I don't agree that there's objective in moral law. since for me, the morality's right or wrong is based on the conclusion of mind of philosophers, God give us wisdom however it is made by ideas of individual.

I agree!!!!!! people have knowledge about moral law. we all know wat is gud and wat is right but still some people choose to do wrong instead to do wat is right .

In my opinion, I'm agree that there's objectivity in moral law. because for me, there's objective in every law, perhaps in moral law also. however it is not just like the laws implementing in our society. regardless of our beliefs and affiliations, still, there's objective in moral law.

Disagree. There are people in this world who based the truthfulness or falsity of certain act depends on the culture their living of. Generally, yes but we have to face the fact that there are people who thinks more on only in their interest.

No. There is no objective in moral law. People can think on their own, and its up to them if they consider an act moral or immoral. life is about how you reason out.

I disagree, because sometimes there is a conflict in cultures, an act maybe good to other person but bad to the other one.

Disagree, kasi lahat tayo ay may sari-sariling pagdidisisyon kung ano ang tama at amali para satin.

Agree, that there is objective in moral law, since moral values in Christianity are have an objective and the basis is the will of God.

Agree, that there is an objective in moral law, most of us doing a good thing because we are believe in God and to his command.

"Generally speaking, people have the knowledge of the moral law". Do you agree or do you disagree with it? why and why not?

I disagree that every people knows the moral law. its because i believe that we wont know if our action is wrong unless we have learn from it... we ought to do wrong things but i don't believe that we know about it...

I agree that being human, we are bound and knowledgeably responsible for the action that we are doing. all of us upon reaching the right age knows what is right from what is wrong. we just simply want to try things in our own even though we know it is wrong..

Yes. I also agree. majority of us, do things and we know whether it is right or wrong. its just curiosity that pushes us to do things, explore and go beyond our limits even if it is not right

I disagree. we cant simply say that majority of us know the moral law... even though wed o things that may hurt others or we do things that are wrong to the eyes of other people, still it is based on the culture we are born. maybe its wrong for them but for others, it might be not
