Notes in Ethics: 7 Characteristics of a Good Moral Theory

1. A good ethical theory is able to satisfactorily explain why people experience a sense of moral obligation.

2. It is able to account for the moral obligations’ “binding force” and “overriding character.”

3. The worldview endorsed by a good moral theory is capable of accounting for the moral accountability in ethics. (For, otherwise, morality would just be like promulgating a strict state law but without real sanction or punishment for the offenders. In such a condition, there would be no essential difference between following and transgressing the law.)

4. A sensible moral theory is able to explain why it is wrong to just live for self-interest just as we please—why even a powerful person must not ignore the dictates of morality and live in pure self-indulgence.

5. It is able to satisfactorily justify why acts of self-sacrifice and heroism matter in morality.

6. It is able to justify that virtues, such as that of compassion and kindness, are not mere hollow abstractions.

7. A good moral theory does not endorse a relative, self-chosen, flexible morality that one can adjust at will.

Morality is nothing but a code of conduct arrived at by mutually accepting persons who consider such code of conduct, such morality, to be in their own best self-interest.

I Agree, because general rule of right living especially such a rule or group of rules conceived as universal and unchanging and as having the sanction of God's will, of conscience, of man's moral nature, or of natural justice as revealed to human reason, the basic protection of rights is the moral law based on man's dignity .

I disagree in that statement that people have the knowledge of moral law, why? because there are persons that is psychological incapacitated. And they are the people who do not have a capacity to think properly.

I Disagree. if morality is certainly known to everyone then why is there differences when it comes to moral perspective. i think morality is something that we learn. something we adopt from the societal environment.

For me it's relative because the concepts of morality often differ between societies and change within societies over time. If morality was objective surely it would be constant.

I disagree. Because every time i watch the news there are still people doing bad things to others like rape,stealing and all other bad things. If people have the knowledge have knowledge on the moral law they wouldn't do that.

Agree. kahit noong mga bata pa lang tayo alam na natin ang moral law,it is either tinuro sa atin ng mga magulang natin or natutunan natin sa school bukod dun meron tayong konsensya na syang gumagabay sa ating kung ano ang dapat at tama nating gawin. Siguro kaya may mga taong gumagawa pa din ng mali sa kapwa niya ay impluwensya na lang o udyok ng mga taong nasa paligid nya.

I disagree, as i can see on our society today people taking the moral law for granted,people specially those who are in authority can manipulate it using their power. What is the use of knowing the moral law if we dont practice it.

Agree.All people know the Moral law eversince because it is a system of guidelines for behavior. We act according to moral law,but it is still depends on us if we obey this. Law which are not supported by moral concscience of the people are liable to become dead letters.

Every person knows how to judge an act whether it is right or wrong. For example, we gossip about someone and laugh at him/her because of his/her embarrassing act knowing that it is wrong. Hence, we have the knowledge of moral law.

disagree,dahil may sarili din tayong desisyon sa paggawa ng tama at mali halimbawa kung papatay ka ng isang tao kung alam mo namang tama ay gagawin mo ito para sa sarili mo,dahil may nagawa siya sayong di karapatdapat o kaya pwede mo siyang ipakulong ng panghabang buhay..kaya hindi lahat ng desisyon ay ibinabatay sa diyos.

I disagree dahil walang objective standard ang moral behavior. It depends upon the person kung tama ba o mali ang ginagawa nya. Nakakaapekto rin ang culture. No action and no behavior can rightly be termed good or bad without qualification.
