Editor’s note: This poem by an award-winning author teaches, among others, that some important lessons in life can be learned from the simple things around us. Happy reading!
THE WORLD IS A SCHOOL OF SORT –
a place to learn a lot of things;
From dawn till dusk to another morn
life’s varied wisdom richly springs.
We only have to look around us
to enjoy as well as learn
the lessons taught by what we see
and the promise that they bring.
Like the rainbow we must learn to bend –
We must learn to bow our heads;
Should we walk with airs above the clouds,
We’ll find us soon falling instead.
Like the bamboo we must learn to be pliant
and learn to stoop to the ground;
as we go humbly on our way,
we’ll reach journey’s end safe and sound.
Like the lizard we must learn to kiss the earth
at the close of a fruitful day;
Reminding us of our divine obligations
to give thanks, to kneel down and pray.
The night, with its thousand eyes
silently twinkling in the distance,
shows, like the breaking new day,
things are willed by Him and don’t happen by chance.
Much indeed is to be learned
by all of us from birth:
We may cry during moments of sorrows
and laugh in times of mirth.
