LIKE CULTURAL RELATIVISM, Ethical Subjectivism attempts to oppose the principle that morality is objective. The following are some of its claims and conclusions.
1. Ethical Subjectivism utterly opposes that there’s objectivity in morality.
2. The theory does not prescribe what moral norms should be practiced. Instead, it is a theory about the nature of moral judgments.
3. According to the theory, moral judgments (e.g. “Homosexuality is immoral”) are mere
expressions of one’s opinion. (Related: Distinguish Opinion from Truth)
4.“Where morality is concerned, there are no facts and no one is right.” (Someone has his opinion; others have their opinions; and that’s the end of it.)
5. Ethical Subjectivism’s basic thought: “Our moral opinions are based on our feelings, and nothing more.”
6. “There is no such thing as objective right or wrong.” (It is a fact that some people are homosexual and some are heterosexual; but it is not a fact that one is good and the other bad.)
7. “When someone says that a thing (e.g. homosexuality) is immoral, he is not stating a fact about it but merely saying something about his feelings toward it.”
8. “In expressing that an action is evil (e.g. Hitler’s extermination of millions of innocent people), we are not stating a fact about that action; rather we are saying that we have negative feelings toward it.”
9. “No matter what ethical statements we make, we are only expressing our personal feeling, and nothing more.”
10. “Whichever stance we choose concerning a controversial moral topic, our choice does not represent the truth.”
Analysis of the claims and assumptions of Ethical Subjectivism is tackled in the article/s “Subjectivism: Another Challenge in Ethics” (
