7 Ways to Get Your Children To Read

It is a usual problem to parents and teachers to make the children to read. Now more than ever, it is much harder to deal because kids have other things which can easily catch their attention like playing computer games, watching TV, and other things that have nothing to do with books or studying. This lecture would lead them to the path reading and enjoyment of books.

The following are 7 ways to get your children or students to read:

1. Choose a book for the child’s age

Provide the child with kinds of books intended for his age. Selecting the proper books is important because it gives a greater chance of getting the child’s interest.

1. Select books that have ‘child appeal’

Stories from cartoons or fantasies are always interesting for children. Especially if the children would see the movie version, they would be proud and happy that they have known the story by reading the book version.

3. Look for book gimmicks

Select book with gimmicks like pop-up pictures to introduce a new letter or number. They usually provide the element of novelty that will make reading interesting to kids.

4. Read to your child

The traditional practice of reading bedtime stories should be preserved as it is helpful. Children’s young imaginations are easier to capture this way. Chances are, they would crave for more.

5. Introduce new books

You can expand their ideas by getting them new books about other subjects. Do ways to tickle their curiosity by adding new yet related information that will inevitably lead them to your bookshelves.

6. Be careful in book selections

Children must be supplied with list of reading materials approved by authorities. Online reviews could be helpful in choosing competitive and quality books.

7. Teach comprehension

Some children have superficial concept about reading. For some, reading is nothing more than merely looking at a string or bunch of words. You should train them to understand the meaning of what they are reading by providing context, applications, and moral lessons.

We should think of different ways on how to make our children read. Let us endeavor to make reading fun for our children. We should develop in them a sustained reading habit as early as possible. Teach also our children the distinction between a book that is worth reading and those not worth buying and reading.
