K-12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines: Beneficial or Additional Burden?

THIS DEBATE is on whether the government should put its limited resources on the Enhanced K-12 Basic Education Program which will add two years to our present 10-year basic education. The enhanced K-12 program as many now know, will have kindergarten, 6 years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grades 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school.

According to the 2010 Department of Education Briefing Report, the last two years (Grades 11 and 12) will provide time for the student to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies. It plans to complete the enhanced 12-year curriculum and start with incoming Grade 1 students of SY 2012-13. The rationale for the two years is to decongest and enhance basic education curricula, provide quality learning, and be at par with other countries in Asia which provide more years for basic education. Now, a lot of students were alarmed. Some argues that this program will serve as an extra expense of our government while some says it’s a big opportunity for us to produce well experienced, competitive and international skilled graduates.

Possible reasons against K-12 Basic Education Program:
1. It is unrealistic and may drive more youths to drop out of school.
2. It is impractical for a country that has one of the lowest budgets for education.
3. It will require extra expenses for families in our society where the majority is impoverished.
4. It could also reinforce cheap semi-skilled labor for foreign markets.
5. It will just add up to the burden of parents and students.

Possible reasons for K-12 Basic Education Program:

1.       It will provide time for the student to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies.
2.       It will also decongest and enhance basic education curricula, provide quality learning, and be at equality with other countries in Asia which provide more years for basic education.
3.       The additional two years in the said program is crucial to come up with a proposal in enhancing our basic education program in a manner that is least disruptive to the current curriculum, most affordable to government and families, and aligned with international practice.
4.       This quality of education is reflected in the inadequate preparation of high school graduates for the world of work or entrepreneurship or higher education.
5.       It’s a good opportunity to match the academic levels of other countries.

for me k-12 is just an additional burden for the filipinos. when there's no k-12 curriculum , there are many out-of-school-youth what if there's k-12 the population of out of school youth will increase again and again. this curriculum is just an additional problem for our parents / guardians

in my own opinion,k-12 program is helpful for all the students like us, in order for us to be advance in learning, we have also a time to train our skills to improve it, to achieve our goals in lives . in this program we will learn all the things that was not teach to us before. in this program we will also learn a lot of things. we are lucky that we're belong in this program because after we graduate in grade 12 , we can find a job that will suit to our knowledge .and also Our parents will not be disturb or will not be worried about our future life , unless we are the one has a problem in our personal life .. .. this is my comment .. please support this guys,, because I know that all of what I said are all right :))))

Just for what

ok

I believe that the newly implemented K-12 System is more beneficial than it is an additional burden. Our government would not dare to implement it if the downsides are weightier than the benefits knowing that our nation's future lies on the youth. For certain, before they put the system into effect, they had conducted studies and surveys to make sure that it's implementation would cause us good and not burden us. The addition of the Kinder Level is one of the wisest steps they made. It is during the early stages of a human beings life that he easily learns and absorbs all the necessary skills that he will need later in life. Prolonging the stay of students in the Elementary and Secondary Levels also has a lot of positive effects: the curriculum will be less compressed due to a more spacious time-frame; there will be more room for additional learning activities; and more time for students to mature and master concepts... Sure, we lack funds, teachers, school buildings, and facilities but these shortages can never defeat the truth that our children will have a better future by going through this new and more systematic system. The K-12 System of Education is a tool that will create a new and better breed of Filipino Youth. How could it be a burden?

more quality learning in academic and entrepreneurship.the student is undergone to k-12 is more competitive in other countries, anyway it is implemented before in other private school.for me k-12 is beneficial although it is additional expense to the family but the results are more chance of having a good work and better life..^_^

for me is good to us. because k-12 are very advance than "bec" because the studies in bec are not advance but to other people bec is must good because you early gradute and k-12 are best because very advance and many thing are you natututunan thats all.

For me k-12 is important to every students to learn more academic lessons and gain more knowledge. And it will also enhance the skills of every students by implemented that curriculum.

Percfet answer! That really gets to the heart of it!

For me it is an additional burden, why because it is hard to study and they added an additional years to elementary and high school. Many student cant afford the tuition and fees for the school so they cannot continue to study. And the government added an additional years. I think it will be okay if they giving scholarships to all needy person and by giving them school supplies and so no more student will suffer from no food in snack break and lunch break, and their parents will focus to other children not to education but to everyday food etc.

This is my reaction to the comment of Jayzon Viterbo I beg to disagree that it is a waste of time. Why because we Filipinos are very strict to the education and so if we give another years to improve the quality of the education here in our country it will be okay and favorable after they graduate and have a better work someday.

This is my reaction to the comment of Jayzon Viterbo I disagree to him, because I am now a K-12 program student and I feel that it will be a successful program given by the government, It will give the student the skills and education that we needed in the near future.

This is my reaction to the comment of Jayzon Viterbo I beg to disagree my brother said, because it is a chance to change students lives to give them a better education and for them to study hard and to have a better future someday. It will give beneficial to the student who study hard and it will be worthy to the parents.

K-12 program is important to us, because, this program help us to learn more knowledge and this knowledge help us to become succsessful in our life and this program help us to REACH our Goal or ACHIEVE our goal in our life !! This program is not only For the enjoyment of our Government, this program aims to teach children to be first in the discourse of school lesson.. i know that many parents disagree in this program, but think first the good arising of this program..

K to 12 Curriculum was a breakthrough in the field of Phil. educational system. There are advantages and disadvantages regarding this program. As an educator, we have to be flexible in adapting to this new curriculum, but I think that there are still some major problems in our educational system that needs to be in priority before we come up with this kind of changes. Poverty is an existing problem in our country that also affects majority of our students in dropping out from school or even to some parents who cannot send their children to school. If our government can provide extensive programs or solutions with the major problems of our country, I think we can also have a better educational system. Improving the quality of education also means improving the quality of life, a life that can give comfort for each family, and a life dedicated to God by living an honest and descent way in our country...

K-12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines: Beneficial or Additional Burden? ---- For me K-12 program is Beneficial not Additional burden. Because of the k-12 becomes more advance lesson for students ready for college.

K-12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines is beneficial it will really help people to gain knowledge and skills to develop themselves and become competent. QUESTION: Are you in favor for K-12 in the Philippines ? Why ?

Im not in favor for K-12 program in the Philippines.

K-12 Basic education is good because it improves the education here in the Philippines. It is really a big help or an additional burden? Why?

This is in the reaction to the question of Lordilyn Valera. Lets wait and see if it will result good to the citizens of the Philippine especially the students under this program.

This is in the reaction to the comment of Lordilyn Valera. For me K-12 is in favor on the rich people where is that they can sent their children in school and a burden to the poor because of the reality that they don't have money for their children's study even if their is Public school.

This is in the reaction to the comment of Lordilyn. It will help the student of the Philippines to be globally competitive

It is good that government are doing something to give good education to the Philippines. My question is do we really need the K-12 Basic education? Why

This is in the reaction to the comment of Lordilyn Valera. For me it is not what we are needing in our country because many family's cant sent their children in school even if there is a public school it will be burden for them to add more years in school.

Bakit?

For me , especially us, high school students, should be aware in the happenings in our society. We should have knowledge to it and be responsible enough to have the care to know something about it. Maybe, these things like the K+12 education program is not our interest to talk about but, it is our need to know even just the basics about it, for we, the future professionals, needs to be knowledgeable in all aspects of the society. And the speeches like what we’ll do will offer each of us a better understanding of different things that are happening around us. that why we need k-12 curriculum :)

For me , The program aims to uplift the quality of education in the Philippines in order for graduates to be easily employed. The program also aims to meet the standards required for professionals who would want to work abroad. Most importantly, the system aims to fully enhance and develop the students in order for them to be well-prepared especially in emotional and cognitive aspects. Through this, graduates will be able to face the pressures of their future workplace. There may be a lot of factors to consider for the K+12 Education to succeed. But as long as we open our minds to change and we will take it on a positive way, we will definitely attain our most-aspired educational standards which will play a great role in our country’s development and will therefore, uplift us from poverty.

For me it is beneficiary. Because i have a Grade 2 son. And their batch started the K-12 program. I'm not saying this as a teacher, but as a mother. I see that my son understand his lesson well by this program. By using mother tongue as the medium of instruction in their some subjects, it help a lot. He can communicate to his teacher better than using English.

For me K-12 is an additional burden. First and foremost, the most affected here are the parents. It will be an additional expenses for them. Secondly, it only prolongs school years which can make the students tedious. The additional two years is not a guarantee that they will be able to get a job right away. It will still depend on the job opportunities that is being offerred in our country.

For me, this K-12 program is an advantage because it will give students ample time to decide before pursuing college. A student needs to think hard on what path he/she should follow in college. This is a very crucial stage in the life of a student for his/her future will depend on this. This extended curriculum will help students realize and decide which step to take. Either go for college or charge ahead towards the working world.

This is a reaction to the comment of Chelsea Alondra Lauron.

for me it's beneficial especially to the youth because It is a program that will require all incoming students to enroll into two more years of basic education.

i think it can be but this burden you've talking about can help you to ensure and enhance your skills in many different difficult subject

Hi Ms. Froline, I have read your comment and I beg to disagree about it because K-12 is truly needed by our educational system in a way that it will increase the quality of education that our system is lagging internationally. And besides there are no tuition fees at public schools and schools nowadays conduct feeding programs to those students needed it. Parents also needs to be more responsible for this system is for the better of the future globally competitive Filipino students and workers.
