Job Hunting: Tools and Techniques

Getting ready for a job search? This guide will help you on how to complete job application and become employed.

Resume

Consider your resume a job hunting tool, design your resume to catch and captivate the employer’s interest, the immediate purpose of which is to secure job interview. Take note that your resume is not just a chronological record of work experience. Its your sales ad.  You have only 10 seconds, more or less, to show the reader that your resume is worth a second look.

Your resume is highly personal. Only you, can organize, write and rewrite it.  It’s a boo-boo to ask somebody to write your biodata. So learn to write a power resume that is effective and can assure you of a job interview

Some pointers in writing a job-winning resume

Begin with soul searching – evaluate your past, the activities you were in, the skills you have cultivated, and the achievements you have earned.

Honesty is the best policy – state facts and only facts. Be accurate in mentioning dates. “ Find out what a man wants and make a deal with him”

Analyze data and organize them – your resume must be ‘crisp’ and must have a punch, a kick and deep impact.

No negatives- remember, your resume is your personal promo. Create the impression that you are a doer, not a somebody who just sits and waits

Edit, re-edit, and rewrite your draft – your resume should be complete, clear and concise. The style must be formal. Avoid personal pronouns like, I, me, my. Make good use of capitalization, bold types, bullets, underlining, etc.

Never send a resume with erasures – sufficient spacing between data helps create a clean impression. Single space all text, and double space every paragraph. Stay away from a long paragraphs. Always put your name on the second page if there is a second page.

Vital Parts of a GOOD Resume

NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT NUMBERS, AND POSITION DESIRED

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

WORK EXPERIENCE (IF YOU HAD)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (interest, special activities, awards/achievements)

Note: Do not offer reference yet, you may instead state “References are furnished upon request”.

Inexperienced or young jobseekers`

Have you participated in a student government? Become one of its officers? Were you the president?  Have you been actively participated in any school activities or programs? Have been a dean's lister? A staffer in school paper? Joined debates, speech, or quiz show?

Make your resume a picture of achievements and accomplishments

Preparation for a Job Interview

Learn everything you can about the company. Review your resume and your competencies. Assemble all the papers you need. Finally, a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and plenty of travel time

Punctuality

Arrive on time A last minute rush means you will arrive flustered and tense. The important thing is you arrive at the location of your interview about 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment.

Professional Appearance

Decide well what you wear before the day of your interview. Make sure all the buttons and zipper works. Be comfortable with what you wear. Finally, take care not to walk into the room laden with all your belongings.

First Impression

Relax and appear confident. Greet the interviewer by name. Introduce yourself in a relaxed and confident manner. Do not sit down unless you are not asked to do so.

The rule of the game is to be your natural self- a little tense but willing to listen and learn, nervous but honest and hardworking.

Body language

Avoid small repetitive movements, like waggling your feet, smoothing your hair. Do not turn away from the interviewer, do not appear frozen, rigid or stiff. Relax and smile. Appear professional at all time. Do not give the interviewer that you are not listening or you are losing interest.

Common question during interview

Tell me something about yourself.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as employee?

What do you like best/least in your past job?

Describe your ideal boss.

How do you think your boss would describe you?

What area(s) of your profession do you seek to improve or develop?

Why did you apply for this job?

Why did you leave your previous job?

What can you offer this company?

What is the most important qualification you possess that would convince me to hire you?

Lets discuss:

1.  What is/are your weak points that may deter you in getting a job. How would you deal with it?

2. (For ME Student) As fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, discuss your competency. (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section)
3. (For ENSE Student) In what field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering you want to practice your competency. Why? Discuss (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section)

When I was a student, I was quite active in our organization. I was once became a dean's lister during my college days. I also participated in some activities that enhance my skills and that gain some friends. In addition to that, I am hardworking, trustworthy, dedicated and honest.

Dotado, Lyndell E. ME-5102 As a fresh graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, I am competent enough to work because of my ability to apply the knowledge of engineering materials and their properties . I can solve problems that occur with rigid bodies in static equilibrium and moving bodies in dynamic movement. I can demonstrate knowledge of power and energy system and fundamentals and their integration within the modern electrical grid. And of course, the important things that makes me a competent person are my willingness to work, innovative and communication skills, flexibility and ability to perform in group. And above all, I am willing to learn in any aspect that would help me to be a better person and employee.

After graduation and passing the board examination, job hunting is the next step for me to take. Considering competition, it might take time for a fresh graduate like me to find a right job. There are lots of Mechanical Engineers all around the world and seeking a job would be really hard considering the population of Mechanical Engineers who are already experienced as to those who are still getting there. But this job is a versatile one. The demand for Mechanical Engineers is directly proportionate to every arising industrial companies here and abroad. So I am not worrying about the constant demand for Mechanical Engineers in the business. The job hunting now narrows down to the fact that I am a fresh graduate without any experiences but my On-the-Job Training. My only weapon for acing this would be my resume. My ability to do something successfully and efficiently is supposed to be reflecting on this, especially the achievements I have made as a student. If to compare with the other experienced Mechanical Engineers, they are already old. Some of them are already exhausted with their jobs. Me, I am young and still vibrant. Though I still don’t have much job experiences, I am the kind of job seeker who is enthusiastically excited to explore what is there in the real world. I am still the curios one and I have lots of fresh ideas to impart to the company. Competing with the other fresh graduates, well, some of them have a job already waiting for them, but I still believe that hard work emanates from within and time will come that it will all be worthwhile. If after I graduated and passed the board exam and job hunting could be so much of a competition, I am still willing to accept the challenge. Somewhere, out there, there is a job waiting for me. The thing is, no matter how hope sucking too many rejections could be, a job seeker should never gave up. Many times I have failed as a student and I never gave up. Could job seeking get any tougher? (Mary Grace P. Pentinio, ME 5102)

As a mechanical engineer, I am into the field of design for the purpose of manufacturing for the development and innovation of the existing methods and processes. Since mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines, I, as a mechanical engineer can deal with a wide variety of complexities and technicalities which include design, analysis, testing, manufacturing, control, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems. This wide range of my chosen field will be helpful in finding a job, but I will not put aside the other factors that are also considered vital. A good personality, and dedication to work, are still given the most credit in hiring an employee. The above mentioned tools and techniques should be highly considered in order to make it in the desired workplace.

Myleen P. Ramos BSME 5102 Competencies are skills, knowledge, and attributes gained through every work, educational, volunteer and life experience. My competencies as a fresh graduate and as a registered Mechanical Engineer are concerned with my understanding to basic engineering concepts, theories and practices, from which I can apply in the development, design, operation and maintenance of any projects or tasks given to me. I also have the knowledge in softwares ( Solid Work, Auto Cad) related to design which may help to further improve and develop the sets of project that will be assigned. I also have the knowledge when it comes in understanding the potential environmental and safety impact of a certain activity, and how to control or minimize it. I can also work under time pressure without sacrificing the quality of product or services provided by this institution. As a fresh graduate I also have the eagerness to learn, and the desire to further improve my skills and knowledge related to my course, with the help of my mentors, supervisors and heads of the project.

As a fresh graduate, all learned skills, principles, and practices are still fresh from my memory and are raring to be employed. I am familiarized with the common functions of Quality Control as well as its standard processes. I am also knowledgeable about engineering design softwares including autocad and solidworks, which is a great deal in today's technological development. Being a Registered Mechanical Engineer has also earned me a credit to be globally recognized and accentuate my trade.

As a new graduate of Mechanical Engineering, my competencies on the job against others are I am younger, passionate and a natural mechanic. I got a lot to learn and am born in the information age. According to a video that I’ve watched at the 4th Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineering National Student Convention, things you learn today will be outdated for the next 3 years. So being young is an edge. Since, younger people are more exposed in the new technologies of today; we have new ideas and can learn more easily of new techniques and ways to innovate. I’m passionate when it comes to machines. I Love knowing how things work, how they are made and how they are assembled. And besides knowing how they work, I love making them work myself. I want to create machines. I am also a licensed Driver. It is also an edge since I might be able to learn operating machineries faster. (Martin V. Macapagal, ME 5102)

Competency is defined as the capability to apply or use a set of related knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform "critical work functions" or tasks in a defined work setting. As a fresh graduate and registered mechanical engineer, my competency will be solely based that I am a graduate of a premier mechanical engineering school in the country. knowing that I have been trained from a renowned school will give me the confidence to compete with other job applicants in finding a job. Since I have undergone my internship training in a company, then I know myself that I will be able to do my superiors orders.

As a registered Mechanical Engineer and a fresh graduate my competency is that i am very competitve. I like being in a healthy and good competition. This helps me aim for a higher goal and do the best i can in every task. I will make use of the knowledge i learned from school. The technical skills will also be applied in my field of work. although i am not as experienceed as other, since the only training i've been to is the On-the-job training, wherein i am not able to fully utilized my skills, i am versatile and very much eager to learn.

This article would be a great help for students who are in their final year, preparing for their first job.

As a newly graduate and licensed Mechanical Engineer from Batangas State University, competency is a legacy that we always acquire and passed generations to generations. Being a newly graduate, experience is never been our field to be proud of. Even laboratory experiences don’t seem to be our cue since our school doesn’t have machineries to show off. All we have is our knowledge of improving, using and proper self actualization of how principles work and be applied. This may be considered as weakness of us but we treat it as strength for it helps us to understand things and situation well even if it is our first time to encounter. It is easier for us to work properly on our newly met equipments and machines for it is the principles it posses we master not the machine itself. Lack of technicality on our place leads us to powerful understanding of theories and principles in its every corner which is we believe is the key to success in engineering field.

3. (For ENSE Student) In what field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering you want to practice your competency. Why? Discuss (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section) Alyanna Kate M. Palas ESE-4101 As a future engineer I must be trained to make an intelligent decisions to protect and enhance the quality of life on Earth rather than endangering it. Definitely practicing my competency in environmental health issues focusing more on how to address the problem in pollution. Pollution's contributors are vehicular, electrical or industrial for example fossil fuels burnt, coal is burnt to produce electricity many gases are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burnt of which main is the carbon dioxide gas it is one of the examples which shows that basic needs of human can harm the ecosystem. Long-term exposure to air pollution can lead to chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer and other diseases; toxic chemicals that accumulate in top predators can make some species unsafe to eat and specially billion of people that is lack of access to clean water and don’t have adequate sanitation, is at risk of contracting deadly diseases. These are potential threats that we don't want to happen, and these can be prevented if there are dedicated engineers or people that will always think of people's sake.

BICOL, ANNAMARIE A. BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering ENSE 4101 Environmental engineers are tasked with solving a wide range of problems, from dealing with waste disposal and controlling pollution to ensuring that our water supplies remain clean and free of disease-causing agents. With these responsibilities and when the rules and regulations are properly implemented, it has a great impact in our surroundings especially here in the Philippines. Tree planting and Coastal clean ups are most of the activity of our organization. These activities gave me awareness that our environment needs some people who will maintain and will take care of the nature we are blessed with. I’d like being an environmental engineer or a pollution control officer. I’d like to focus on taking care in our environment and serve for our greener and sustainable environment.

As an Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, I want to practice my competency in the field of Public Health Engineering and in the field of Environmental Engineering because our surrounding has many kind of disease that we people or cause of them because of improper waste disposal. As a Public health Engineer its focuses in preventing the cause of disease and in Public health. In Environmental Engineering I want to become a politician and I will make a law that protects our environment.

Hecel A. Mayo BSEnSE 4101 In BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, we’re embraced in many activities like research and development, laboratory analysis and testing, environmental pollution control, and market research and analysis. Since Competency refers to skills and knowledge gained from education and life experienced, I prefer to apply my Competency in Analyzing and Applying appropriate Theory and practice in Sanitary Engineering Infrastructures. Because one of my aim as an Environmental and Sanitary Engineer is to promote the awareness on public health and environment which may achieved thru safe access on Drinking Water Supply and efficient Sewerage and Drainage System. And in order to achieve it, I have to be competent enough to provide efficient and economic infrastructure services by a well-planned execution of Plumbing System. By this chosen field of mine, my eagerness to learn and be successful would be a good driving force on being Competitive.

Vincent Jon E. Gallardo BS EnSE 4101 If I were to be an Environmental and Sanitary Engineer in the future, I will be practicing my competency in the field of Pollution Control as a Pollution Control Officer(PCO). Because I think it will be an advantage for me since Environmental Engineering is one of our major subjects and I've already attended seminars and training programs that is focusing on Environmental Conservation, which I believe as a PCO's main task. Aside from that, I'm also familiar with the PCO jobs after I took my OJT as PCO-Trainee at AG&P, and that is to manage and minimize the adverse impacts of company's activity and operation by optimizing the use of resources, reducing waste generation, and controlling the emission of pollutants to air, water, and land.

When you said you are an Engineer, most people think that you are engaged in jobs like designing, constructing, planning, inventing or experimenting. They don’t know that there are some other fields of engineering. I guess Environmental and Sanitary is one of the important major in engineering especially in today’s world. As a student taking that major, I would prefer practicing in the field of HEALTH and SAFETY. I do believe that in a firm safety of everyone and a healthy environment are always prioritize by the management. Why? Because a company will not function at its best if the employees are uncomfortable with their working environment. When I took the course MicroPara and OSH, it made me more interested in the said field. Protecting the workers against any possible hazard might be tough but I think it’s really challenging and worth working for. Maybe God put me in this field so that I can help not only the firm but as well as its workers. ---Debbie Anne P. Marcelino/EnSE/ESE-4101.

Kevin Judd P. Laredo BSEnSE/EnSE-4101 I want to practice my competency in the field of Water Resources Engineer because i want to design sewer pipes in which i can provide a potable and safe water in the structure or buildings that i will be working at and to have a clean water getting in from different sources.

Aliza Marie P. Delos Reyes EnSE-4101 I want to practice my competency in the field of Waste Water Engineering (treatment systems especially for waste water collection). Because as a future Environmental and Sanitary Engineer we mostly deal in sustainable waste management. And in order to achieve this goal we are the one to incorporate ourselves in this kind of project. We also ensure the safe handling and treatment of waste water and sewerage. Water is our main concern. Since there is no pure water found in nature we are definitely in charge in removal of impurities from waste water before they reach the natural bodies of water. If waste water is not treated properly there is harm for the environment and human health. And to protect our environment is our first main goal.

As an Environmental and Sanitary Engineer I would like to practice or enhance my knowledge about Water Recycling, because first of all it is the most in-demand or the most needed thing on being a Sanitary Engineer now a days. And also, i know that it would be a big help for not just for the community but also for the world.

SOLIS,GILBERT A. ENSE 4101 In Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, I want to practice the field of microbiology because first,it's interesting. It's interesting because it's about science which happened to be my favorite subject since elementary ,thus, there is willingness to work and practice my competency. Second, I can use my past learning about my microbiology-related subjects. Third, to satisfy the needs for environmental engineers because for us, it's better to prevent the sickness before it happen than to cure the sickness itself (there will come the pathogens, the microbiological disease-causing microorganisms).

Estrella, Jhoanna Mary T. EnSE - 4101 I would like to practice my competency as a Sanitary Engineer. Whose role is to conduct a sanitary inspection and evaluation of establishments and works at the city government office. I believe that in this field of practice I can help many people as I will serve the public by securing their health through proper sanitation of public places. As we all know that before giving a sanitary permit one must conduct a sanitary inspection, and I would like to be that person who will lead that inspection of establishment. I want to ensure that every issued sanitary permit really passed the standards. Through this I can say that my learning from school would make sense if I am able to help myself and others on my chosen field.

3. (For ENSE Student) In what field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering you want to practice your competency. Why? Discuss (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section) Cabello, Carl Anthony T. EnSE-4101 I would like to try to enter the field of water supply. When I first decided to enter the course of environmental and sanitary engineering, I decided that it would be about solid waste or waste water management However, I decided that water supply would be the field that I wanted to enter. It is because I can understood and enjoyed the discussed concepts during the course period. Still, if given the chance to enter another field, i would gladly study and learn in order to enter that field. I also believe that it is unwise to limit myself to just one field with today's job requirements.

Jessica Aizel G. Araciel - ESE- 4101 The field that I want to practice my competency is in the treatment and supply of clean drinking water and the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater. I was inspired with this since I enrolled and have the more knowledge what my course is and also because of our visitation in the La Mesa Treatment plant. Although we have now the access to clean drinking water and adequate wastewater treatment facilities, some areas still has basic sanitation needs. And with these, I can also help to protect the public health and the environment. These protects public health by preventing disease transmission within human beings by assuring a supply of healthy drinking water, treatment of waste water and preserve the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of water. Water and wastewater treatment are one of the most important things that a sanitary engineer have to offer to the rest of the area.

I would like to be in the field of Wastewater and Water Treatment. Safe drinking water is essential to humans and other life forms even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. Access to safe drinking water has improved over the last decades in almost every part of the world, but approximately one billion people still lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion lack accesses to adequate sanitation. Here in the Philippines alone, there are still some rural areas where safe and potable are our of reach. I was fascinated on how water was purified and delivered to consumers. It undergoes a series of process and treatment before it can be determined as potable. Wastewater is any water that has been adversely affected in quality by anthropogenic influence. Treated wastewater is discharged into receiving water via an effluent sewer. There are numerous processes that can be used to clean up wastewaters depending on the type and extent of contamination. Treated wastewater can be reused as drinking water, in industry (cooling towers), in artificial recharge of aquifers, in agriculture and in the rehabilitation of natural ecosystems. With wastewater treatment, I would like to be part of the development wherein wastewater, after treatment, can be said to be at par with the set standards for effluent and at the most, potable. Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 96.5% of the planet's water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Only 2.5% of the Earth's water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth's freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products. Humans have only 2.5% of the total Earth’s water, and we have to act to conserve it, for today and for the next generation. Ma. Carsy P. Fajardo ESE – 4101

EnSE-4101 The field that I want to practice my competency in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering,I decided to choose Plumbing, because said that once the water and wastewater system is completed, homes without plumbing will get the hookups with future funding. Having the entire system in place will be huge for the community. Studies have shown that lack of plumbing in homes poses a far greater risk for skin and respiratory infections than homes with plumbing. And plumbing is in demand all over the world that's why I choose Plumbing.

Anna Farida Jane Asilo ESE 4101 As an EnSE student, I want to practice my competency in the field of plumbing. It is interconnected in making of system of pipes, drains fittings, valves, valve assemblies, and devices installed in a building for the distribution of water for drinking, heating and washing, and the removal of waterborne wastes, and the skilled trade of working with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures in such systems. It also deals with laying of pipe lines which provide a means of transportation for fluids. Being in this field, I can improve my passion in designing pipes that will be used in different establishments. I will be the one who will install or repair piping systems, plumbing fixtures and equipment such as water heaters and backflow preventers. And I also believed that the plumbing industry is a basic and substantial part of every developed country due to the need for clean water, sanitary collection and transport of wastes. For those reasons, I chose the field of plumbing, which is one of the field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering.

As an environmental and sanitary engineering student, i think i can practice my competency in the field of environmental service because there are a lot of environmental issue regarding different cases. For example, the place where you can properly established different business structure and also to observe and examine the pollution that the different establishment produce that can possibly affect our environment. Being a student, I know have many things to do for the sake of our environment, from small things to big things. I can also apply my learning about environmental and sanitary in order to enhance my ability and to be capable enough to compete with others. And if I have given a chance to be an engineer,I will be the one who will support different laws with regards to environmental issue.

As a Student of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, the field that I want to practice my competency is in designing wastewater collection and treatment systems, develop rational approaches towards sustainable waste management, and perform quality control checks. Because I want to took all my efforts to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control. I took up this course to provide such learnings in this field to carry out solutions in every problem that our environment has, and by that I can manage my competency in this profession. I think this things will probably help everyone.

I want to practice my competency in the field as a Safety Officer and Pollution Control Officer, this is the the first reason why I am taking Environmental and Sanitary Engineer. Because my uncle who happens to be an engineer introduce me this kind of practice in the field of engineering. And the pay is good in this field. A Safety Officer is the one who develop and recommend measures for assuring personnel safety, and to monitor and/or anticipate hazardous and unsafe situations, while a Pollution Control Officer A Pollution Control Officer (PCO), is a type of career that engage in environmental protections and environmental compliance, which the main goal is to provide and establish companies Objective, Targets and Programs, that will help the company and the organization on the preservation of our natural resources, reduce the generations of the company waste and establish proper mitigation on pollution controls in the environment aspect and impact on air, land, water, flora and fauna and human living. In this field I can use the learning that I acquired during college on Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, etc. and also one of the reasons why I want to be in this field is because many company our always in need of a Safety Officer and Pollution Control Officer, so there are more opportunities waiting for me. I choose the field of academic because I want to teach. There are professionals that are not into teaching that's why teachers for this field is lesser and if there is no teachers who are teaching Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, there will be less opportunity to have more students taking Environmental and Sanitary Engineering. After passing the board exams I'm sure opportunities will knock our doors ahead. Choosing a specific field for our own career are really important. As a future Environmental and Sanitary Engineer someday I would gladly choose the field of plumbing (design) and water supply engineering. Why? Water is everywhere, Plumbing and water supply engineering will surely BOOM for the next 10 years. High rise buildings are then soon to be constructed, Sanitary engineer are always in charge for plumbing and in construction, a project will always hire and hire design engineers that will promote up to its highest position just like a head engineer, I know I will learn a lot to this field. Water supply one of the most in demand fields in EnSE ensuring people are being reached by water, Sanitary Engineers are also the main in charge for this, In water supply engineering I can help people through ensuring that water from reservoir to households are purely clean and also I can practice my own profession as a full pledged Environmental and Sanitary Engineer. Thanks and Godbless :)

Princess Catherine B. Discuss (Please write your Full Name, Course and Section) For now that I am still a student, I am not yet sure if in what field of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering will I be in the future. It is because there are lots of job opportunities and this degree is very in demand here in the country and even abroad. But it would be a great pleasure for me if I would be able to be a Pollution Control Officer of an institution or a company. On this field I want to practice my competency by being a person not only with a sufficiency of knowledge and skills that enable to act in a wide variety of situations. But also with a necessary skills, experience and knowledge to manage health and safety. Because each level of responsibility has its own requirements. Since my chosen career is Environmental and Sanitary Engineering which is about in achieving and maintaining the environment and public health.
