From the video given above, too much tension in the throat is not a proper way of singing, proper way of singing is using more of our diaphragm. Therefore, too much tension in the throat while singing is not using more of our diaphragm.

it is appropriate to use your diaphragm while singing than to use your throat. Using your throat will produce a nasty sound.
