FOR PEOPLE who are very much concerned about their hair, here are some tips on how to give their head and hair a good shampoo.

1. Brush hair briskly to smooth out tangles and loosen dirt.

2. Massage scalp firmly for 5 minutes to make it supple.

3. Wet hair with warm water. Apply shampoo and work up a good lather. With your fingertips, work the suds into your scalp. Gently pull the suds through your hair strands. Massage the areas behind the ears and at the base of the skull where the oil=producing glands are. The top of the head, which has no oil-glands or muscles, needs massaging to stimulate circulation.

4. Rinse well with warm water. End with cold or cool water.

5. Wrap hair in towel -- turban-style. Do not wring wet hair. Towel-dry your hair to give it a high gloss or sheen. Use wide-toothed comb to remove tangles.

We sometimes ask ourselves, how often should we shampoo? According to the book  The Art of Natural Hairgrowing authored by Lolita Lozano, the frequency of shampooing depends on several factors:

1. Your hair type and texture - coarse thick hair can withstand more frequent shampoong than fine and spars hair.

2. The climate - in the tropics, hair demands special care. Humidity and perspiration affect the hair's manageability and vitality.

3. The season - during summer, wash hair often to remove perspiration which deposits dirt on the scalp and attracts bacteria. Besides, if allowed to remain for sometime, it robs the hair of natural oils.
