Job Hunting: Tools and Techniques

Getting ready for a job search? This guide will help you on how to complete job application and become employed.

Resume

Consider your resume a job hunting tool, design your resume to catch and captivate the employer’s interest, the immediate purpose of which is to secure job interview. Take note that your resume is not just a chronological record of work experience. Its your sales ad.  You have only 10 seconds, more or less, to show the reader that your resume is worth a second look.

Your resume is highly personal. Only you, can organize, write and rewrite it.  It’s a boo-boo to ask somebody to write your biodata. So learn to write a power resume that is effective and can assure you of a job interview

Some pointers in writing a job-winning resume

Begin with soul searching – evaluate your past, the activities you were in, the skills you have cultivated, and the achievements you have earned.

Honesty is the best policy – state facts and only facts. Be accurate in mentioning dates. “ Find out what a man wants and make a deal with him”

Analyze data and organize them – your resume must be ‘crisp’ and must have a punch, a kick and deep impact.

No negatives- remember, your resume is your personal promo. Create the impression that you are a doer, not a somebody who just sits and waits

Edit, re-edit, and rewrite your draft – your resume should be complete, clear and concise. The style must be formal. Avoid personal pronouns like, I, me, my. Make good use of capitalization, bold types, bullets, underlining, etc.

Never send a resume with erasures – sufficient spacing between data helps create a clean impression. Single space all text, and double space every paragraph. Stay away from a long paragraphs. Always put your name on the second page if there is a second page.

Vital Parts of a GOOD Resume

NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT NUMBERS, AND POSITION DESIRED

Have you participated in a student government? Become one of its officers? Were you the president?  Have you been actively participated in any school activities or programs? Have been a dean's lister? A staffer in school paper? Joined debates, speech, or quiz show?

Make your resume a picture of achievements and accomplishments

Preparation for a Job Interview

Learn everything you can about the company. Review your resume and your competencies. Assemble all the papers you need. Finally, a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and plenty of travel time

Punctuality

Arrive on time A last minute rush means you will arrive flustered and tense. The important thing is you arrive at the location of your interview about 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment.

Professional Appearance

The rule of the game is to be your natural self- a little tense but willing to listen and learn, nervous but honest and hardworking.

Body language

Avoid small repetitive movements, like waggling your feet, smoothing your hair. Do not turn away from the interviewer, do not appear frozen, rigid or stiff. Relax and smile. Appear professional at all time. Do not give the interviewer that you are not listening or you are losing interest.

Fresh graduates may always have the impression of being inexperienced and a newbie in the industries. They may have the disadvantage of being young and their colleagues may have long been in the industry before they came in. However, these does not mean that they should not be competent enough to take part in the different activities to attain the objectives of the company. They can show their competency by being eager to learn more knowledge and experiences, by asking questions to improve what they already know, by welcoming the suggestions of their superiors and colleagues, and lastly, by being confident enough and believing in their own capability that he/she may also partake in the different crucial decisions to be made in the company. This way, fresh graduates may show that they may be NEW but they are READY TO BE EQUIPPED and contribute for the success of the organization. :)

MARVINN D. VILLANUEVA ME-5101 As fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, knowing our competencies are critical for certain promotions for us to request training and development opportunities to seek out specific feedback and coaching from others. Since we are new to the environment, adapting with the changes among individuals and work specifications are an absolute must. The principles and theories we learned from school back then must be applied for better work understanding especially when you are working with an Engineering company. Don’t be afraid to ask questions for it is a good indication of willingness to learn something new. In addition, be prepared for the fact that schooling and working are two different things. There are stuffs that are not taught in school but are applied at work. There are a lot of difficulties along the way which will hone you to be a successful professional in the years to come.

Suarez, Mark Marlon G. BSME ME-5101 As fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, my competency as an engineer is that I have the ability to do the task efficiently even if I am under pressure. I have experienced lots of difficulties in my studies wherein I have learned and gained the ability to find other alternatives to solve a certain problem giving the best opportunity to choose the best alternative. In my On-the-Job training at JGC Phil., I also learned my competency to work with the professionals. The time is the most important thing wherein I work also like a professional that I always do my work in the most efficient manner so that I could cope up with the deadline of submission of the project. I learned that to be able to do the task efficiently, you must know the common mistake of the previous worker so that you can avoid it to do the same mistake again so you have your best work in a lesser time. Graduates from Batangas State University are one of the most competent professionals in the country and even worldwide. It is because of their professors and their way of teaching to harness the full capability of students to make them to be globally competitive.

As a fresh graduate and registered Mechanical Engineer, I can say that I am competent enough in the field that I have chosen. I know for myself that I am equipped not just by theoretical knowledge but also the skills and proper attitude that are essential to the work that I am taking. During our college days, we are not just taught by the theories and practical applications about our study but also how to handle work under pressure and proper time management. As a fresh graduate, I am more eager to do every task that is given to me and I am open to new ideas and learning that can help me improve myself.

Mechanical Engineering ME-5101 since i am not a top student in school, i am willing to give my better performance for the job because i need to learn more for the best. i had my on-the-job training experience that really awakened me up on how things go inside the company. i adjusted to the environment of the real world outside the school. my supervisor commented on my performance as a fast learner and finishes work on time. this is my competency and i will keep those comments as part of my interest on the job to give satisfaction to the company.

ME-5101 Being an alumnus of Mechanical Engineering of Batangas State University, is already an edge to get a specific job. I, as a Borbonian graduate, definitely do have the hard-working skills that a company is searching for. The obstacles I'd been through before I'd got my diploma and license served as a long-term training ground. Through this, I could apply the principles and attitudes my instructors had told me. However, I could say that the On-the-Job Training I'd done could also be an edge since I became familiar with the actual job atmosphere. I'd learned how to deal with different kind of people and work well even under pressure.

As a Mechanical Engineer from Batangas State University, I have acquired many skills and competencies which I can surely utilize in my future job. Being punctual is one; I believe that demonstrating punctuality at work is one way of showing how you value your job and your willingness to do it. Another thing is, I can communicate effectively both in written and oral form. I also have many experiences as a group leader where I was able to demonstrate responsibility in doing projects together with my group mates. Aside from that, I was also exposed to several mechanical works during my On-The-Job Training at a well-known company here in the Philippines. From there, I learn on how to work under pressure in order to meet deadlines. I have also witnessed many critical decision making situations there. Though I was not really involved in that, I was able to observe and learn how to handle such kind of situations and I can say that if I will be given opportunities to do such things, I will be able to exercise critical thinking before making any choices and decisions. I am also a keen observer that's why I can easily identify uncertain conditions and provide necessary corrective actions. I also know how to plan and prioritize work. Those are some of the things where I am good at.

As fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, I can say that I have the competencies that companies are looking for. Being a graduate of Batangas State University is one of them. As this school is the number one top performing in this field furthermore, professors from this school are really competent. Thus, we, the students are also competent. I am also a hardworking person. I can easily understand lessons thus; I know I’m a good Mechanical Engineer. Though I’m only a fresh graduate and I don’t have the experiences that others have, I can still work at par with the others because I gained the training also from Keppel Shipyard Batangas which is a well-known company. I can also work with minimal supervision and I’m a well- disciplined person. It’s me, Manolo A. Dalangin Jr., a student from ME-5101.

In time of global standardization and competition, the employers seek to hire competent workers that will add growth to the organization with inspiring performance. Thus, acquisition of necessary competencies in order to penetrate the industry is essential especially for fresh mechanical engineering graduates or even registered mechanical engineers. These competencies include the knowledge and skills learned in academic institutions as well as the appropriate attitude towards work. Some of the fundamental skills I gained in school include solid technical know-how with respect to basic mechanical engineering, proficiency in various computer-related programs like AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Turbo C and computer literacy (MS office) which is helpful when specializing in engineering design. In addition to that, excellence in interpersonal relationship and exceptional communication skills—both oral and written is helpful to maintain harmonious relations at the workplace. However, the mentioned skills are all for naught without the key values i.e. punctuality, diligence, self-esteem and respect.

I, being a fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer can be a competent individual. Equipped with all the values, knowledge and skills that I have gained from Batangas State University, which is the leading school in this field, I can say that I am ready to face the challenges and be a productive individual needed by the society. I can help to create useful things for our world. Graduating from this degree, which is a very broad major opens a variety of career paths. With the technology advancements and global problems of today, being a registered mechanical engineer will be at the forefront of these solutions. Being a fresh graduate, I am open for the new learnings from other people especially from my superiors, I am willing to accept challenges and job opportunities within my field. I will do all my best not only to learn more but to inspire other people as well.

In a job interview, I can discuss my competency in two ways, first is a written report of my experiences that are essential for the job I want to end up with. This written report maybe a resume which is a very important factor on a job interview. Second, answered questions from the interviewer are additional factor that may or can show how competent I am and that the resume I showed to the interviewer is not for a show off. On answering question given by the interviewer, I will answer it in a way that I really can do a difference in their company, than I can excel on the job that I want to have.

As a fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer (hopefully the soonest ^_^), my competency will happen to be very satisfactory. Yes, I have to and I do believe that it will be. :) Well, this is because I believe competent people in an organization are the key to success of the organization and the person himself/herself. And as one of the aspiring competent Mechanical Engineer in the near future, I figure myself to become an efficient communicator. If ever I have to attend another class in order to improve my communication skills, I’ll be very willing. This is because I know that communication is one of the main factors that will affect my competency in the workplace. My everyday conversations are the one that will mold my relationships with my colleagues and superiors. Even before I get a job, effective communication will be prominently needed in my job interviews. Another one is the efficient task and risk management. I’ll compel myself to have diversity in everything I do in order for me to manage my tasks accordingly. I’ll organize my assignments through planning and scheduling and exercise punctuality to avoid deadlines and rush hours. On the other hand, I’ll also be open in any challenge and risks that my job could offer, for me to handle problems with proper dealing and decision-making. For me, risk management is serious but can be very easy for people with confidence and commitment to finish his/her jobs and achieve his/her goals. This will also mold me to become a good leader. Well, as a whole, being competent will be part of my daily routine in the future. It is necessary to not just know and learn it, but as a professional, I’ll live with it. As a fresh graduate and newly registered Mechanical Engineer, I can say that I am ready to work in the industry. Since they are inexperienced, the stereotyping among fresh graduates is that most of them are incompetent or not fit to work on the profession they have pursued. This usually comes from the fresh graduates' ability to to look for a job. The main reason is that they are not ready to work due to some incompetencies. The other deal is that they lack the required communication skills. As a Batangas State University graduate, I can say that the university honed my competencies well as a mechanical engineer. I am trained to work under stress and pressure and I think its a good thing. It is a good training ground to prepare me for my future work in the industry. Also, I can apply the theories and principles that I have learned inside the university into the field where I am gonna work. Having the chance to perform my On- the - job training at a power plant justifies this. I got the chance to see with my own eyes the equipment and processes that we only see at the university on textbooks and pictures. Lastly, I can say that the university has helped me develop my communication skills. Personally, I understand the importance of having the confidence and the ability to express what I wanna say when it comes to job hunting. As a professional, it is a big deal for me to land on a job not just I love but also fits my educational training and credentials. Having said all of these, I can say that I am competent enough to work as an efficient, ethical, confident and of course, professional mechanical engineer.

With these universities, I gained knowledge but at the same time I improved myself to become a better individual who can face the world without fear and doubt. These universities helped me not only to have knowledge competency but also personality competency that served as my guide in my journey of being a registered Mechanical Engineer. I also considered my On-The-Job Training at Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation as one of the achievements in my life for I learned a lot of things in this company. And out of 180 students who took up the examination, I got that great opportunity to be one of their trainees. PSPC gave more meaning to the word "family": its importance, its happiness and its unity. PSPC helped me to improve my personality competency and at the same shared knowledge about my field. I may not be as good as the magna cum laudes, summa cum laudes or even the cum lauded but there's one thing that I have that no one can ever beat: My Personality. I am Aina Trixie F. Hidalgo, Registered Mechanical Engineer.

As a fresh graduate and a registered Mechanical Engineer, I have the knowledge about the machine and power plant designs, HVAC system, refrigeration system, fluid machinery and many more related subjects in my field. So I can say that I have the basic skills to pursue careers in manufacturing firms, automotive companies, power generation and utility plants. Fortunately, besides the technical skills that I've learned, I also have good communication and interpersonal skills. In my working career, I am confident that I can contribute new concepts for the development of the company. I'm also a fast learner individual. I have the eagerness to learn new things that will improve my knowledge and skills. I am looking to stay, grow and learn with the company.

I do believe that triumph, as an engineer in this day, requires competence and a combination of management, leadership, effective communication and business skills. Leadership is something that I have naturally and my school ( Grade and High School days) recognized this by electing me as one of the officers, which I believe has further improved my leadership and communication skills. In addition, decision-making is one of the skills I have acquired. Taking the right action, based on what we know, and being responsible for what happens. You can ask other people for their opinions. Most importantly, you must know what else could happen if you don’t do something on time.

Celemen, Roi Medwin A. BSME/ME-5101 Being a fresh graduate of BSME, I have gained multiple competencies through striving and maintaining my determination throughout my studies. And these competencies I have are earned fundamental for the effective and efficient practice of my chosen profession. One of these is my gained knowledge towards various safety practices, which in turn will be helpful when I am in the industry and practicing my profession. Also, the motivation I have towards learning new things keeps me in the loop of the latest innovations in the industry. Having the idea of safety in mind, which were taught to us when we were still in college, has led me to maintain competency towards quality assurance and control standards. Of course, in every company or industry involved with production, quality assurance and control will always be a requirement towards producing quality products and/or services. In the years that I have studied this course, I can say that safety, above all is of utmost concern, and therefore, we have learned various ways on how to implement safety practices in the workplace, especially in the industry. After effectively implementing safety towards the workplace, next will be the efficient employment of resources. In this aspect, I have learned that efficiency and effectiveness can really be of huge advantage towards using resources. With efficiency and effectiveness involved in work, the resources, i.e. materials, labor, etc. may be utilized to a higher potential. Although there were many things that I learned in studying the course, I can say that there are a lot more that I can learn in practice. The ideas and theories imparted to us by our professors back then will now be applied in practice and therefore will give me the further knowledge that I will not be able to earn if I were to only study in college and practicing my profession in the industry will help me grow more.
